I’ve started this post about a dozen times over the last few days, and every time I’ve struggled to find the words.

It’s been a few days since Monday evening’s devastating fire in downtown Sparta, and somehow it still doesn’t feel real.

This one hits incredibly close to home for me. My older brother, Doug, was one of the people impacted by the fire. In the blink of an eye, he lost his home and so much of what he had built his life around. We’ve been spending these days trying to help him navigate this new, unexpected normal, one that no one should ever have to figure out.

But this post isn’t just about my brother.

It’s about our community.

It’s about the families who are waking up each morning trying to figure out what comes next. It’s about the people who lost their homes, their belongings, their sense of security, and, for some, so much more.

And this is where I’m asking my flower people to rally around Sparta. 🌸

Because we know how flower people are. You are some of the most generous, compassionate, big-hearted people I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. We may be scattered all over the place, but we have an incredible way of showing up for one another, and I know you can show up for this little mountain community, too.

If you’re able, please consider donating to the official community relief fund through the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce. 100% of the proceeds will be divided evenly among all of the fire victims. Every dollar, no matter the amount, is a tangible way to remind these families that they are not alone.

And I’m not stopping there. 💗

Once I can get my brother settled into his new normal and things calm down enough for me to breathe, Fiddleleaf Flower Farm will be hosting a donation event to help support the fire victims. I’ll share more details as soon as I’m able.

For now, if you can donate, please do. If you can’t, sharing this post helps more than you know.

Please keep Sparta in your hearts. Keep these families in your thoughts. And if you’re one of my flower friends reading this from miles away, know that your support means more to this community than you probably realize.

We’re a small town.

But we’re a strong one.

And right now, we need to take care of our own. 🌿💕

Between now and our first frost, it’s a bit of a mad dash. ⏰🌸

There’s a mile-long list of new dahlia varieties I’m hopeful will make their way into our next tuber sale. But first… they all have to make it to photo day. 😂

The dahlias have exploded. Come take a look at what’s blooming! 😍

I want to be brutally honest for a minute, this has been one of the hardest seasons we’ve ever had at Fiddleleaf.

I’ve been nonstop with flowers since January. From storage issues and dividing tubers, to preparing for the tuber sale, community events, shipping orders, and then planting three times the amount we planted last year. And just when we thought we might catch our breath, the weather decided otherwise.

We went from a historic heat wave and drought conditions to rain seemingly every single day. We’ve battled powdery mildew, stressed plants, disease, weeds, and all of the other little fires that seem to constantly need putting out.

It. Never. Ends. 😂

Sometimes I think people look at a flower farm and see the pretty part, the fields full of dahlias, the buckets of blooms, the sunsets and assume it all comes easily.

It doesn’t.

These flowers have taken over every spare minute that Shane and I have. Early mornings. Late nights. Weekends. Days when we’re exhausted but still have another row to plant, another order to pack, another problem to solve.

There have absolutely been moments this year when I’ve wondered, What are we doing? 😅

But then I walk out into the field and see this.

And I remember why we started.

This farm is hard. Really hard. But it is also one of the most rewarding things we’ve ever poured our hearts into.

Thank you for being here for the messy parts and the beautiful ones. It means more than you know. 🌸

There is no one else I’d rather stand in the rain with. 🌧️

Shane took an empty plot of grass and helped me turn it into a flower farm. He has been the backbone of Fiddleleaf from the very beginning, building, fixing, hauling, digging, planting, and somehow always figuring out how to make my crazy ideas a reality. 😂

He has stood beside me through the long days, the hard days, the disappointments, and the moments that make every bit of it worth it.

When I look at this farm, I see flowers. But I also see years of hard work, countless hours, and a husband who has believed in this dream right alongside me. 🥹

I couldn’t imagine doing any of this without you. Thank you for building this little dream with me. ❤️🌸
