🚜🌾 Proud Papa Moment! 🌾🚜

While we’re sharing some of the big happenings around the farm, I’ve got to share one of my favorite moments of the season.

Asher got the chance to try his hand at running the hay mower, and he took to it like a seasoned haymaker! Watching him learn, gain confidence, and take an interest in farm life makes all the hard work worthwhile.

There’s something special about passing down the skills, values, and work ethic that come with caring for the land and livestock. These lessons can’t be taught from a book—they’re learned one field, one fence, and one hay crop at a time.

I’d say he did a pretty good job for his first turn in the driver’s seat! 🚜💪

The future of Mountain Heritage Homestead is looking pretty bright. 🌱

🌱🐑🐓 Farm Update from Mountain Heritage Homestead 🚜🌾

I’m sorry I haven’t shared much lately, but it isn’t because there’s nothing going on around here!

Here at Mountain Heritage Homestead, spring has definitely sprung! 🌿☀️

✅ The first batch of pasture-raised broilers has been harvested.
✅ Some of our first-cutting hay has been put up in small square bales.
✅ Every ewe has lambed, and the pastures are full of healthy, growing lambs. 🐑❤️

We’ve also received some much-needed rain recently, and we’re thankful for every drop. 🌧️ The moisture is helping the grass take off, setting us up for another round of rotational grazing and hay production in the weeks ahead.

This time of year is always busy, but it’s rewarding to see the fruits of the work coming together—from healthy livestock to full hay wagons and green pastures.

Thank you to everyone who follows along and supports what we do. We appreciate you being part of the journey! 🇺🇸🌱

There’s nothing quite like seeing full hay barns, green pastures, healthy livestock, and freezers stocked with homegrown food. 🏡🌾❄️

Full barns and full freezers! If you’re looking for quality hay or fresh pasture-raised poultry, we’d be glad to help meet your needs. Give us a call or send us a message—we’d love to help feed your family and livestock. 🐓🌱🐑

Here’s an update on our first batch of broilers 🐥

They’ve been out on pasture for 2 weeks now and have adjusted really well 🌱☀️

These birds are living the way chickens were meant to live—fresh air, sunshine, scratching for bugs, and foraging on grasses to naturally supplement their non-GMO feed 🌾🐞

Healthy animals → healthy food → healthy families 🙌

Be on the lookout for fresh chicken in about a month! 🍗

These little guys turn 2 weeks old tomorrow (3/23), and in just a couple more weeks they’ll be moving out of the brooder and onto pasture in our chicken tractors.

Out there, they’ll live the kind of life we believe every bird should have—fresh air, sunshine, and the freedom to scratch, dust bathe, and forage. From insects (a natural, high-protein food source) to fresh greenery, they get to express their natural behaviors while growing into healthy, well-developed birds. To quote Mr. Salatin …”let the chicken express its chickeness”

At the same time, they’re giving back to the land. Their manure helps build soil fertility, supports pasture growth, and plays a role in breaking parasite cycles for our other livestock. It’s all part of creating a balanced, regenerative, polyculture system.

This is what regenerative agriculture looks like to us.

And when you choose to buy locally raised meat from our farm, you’re supporting more than just food—you’re supporting a system built on care, stewardship, and community.

We put our hearts into this work, and we’re proud to offer something you can truly believe in:
Great food. Great health. Great people. Great communities. Great land.

Behind the Scenes at Harvest Time:

Apologies for the lack of recent posts — not due to a lack of activity, but quite the opposite. There’s been a lot happening behind the scenes as we continue our pasture raised broiler journey.

The next major step in that journey is harvest day. It’s always a solemn experience — recognizing that one life is being given so that others may be nourished. That’s a reality we don’t take lightly. It’s why we work with people who approach this part of the process with the same level of respect and care that we do.

Enter Bev and the team at EcoFriendly Foods. They bring a deep understanding and commitment to every stage of processing and packaging — from the tough parts to the final presentation of those delicious cuts we’ve all come to love. Their work is consistently outstanding.

Bev is a firm believer in collaboration: farmers, producers, processors, butchers, chefs, and cooks — all working together to ensure the end consumer not only enjoys the product but understands the care and effort behind it. He’s built a network that brings together quality and intention, helping to offer a true smorgasbord of flavor, responsibly raised and expertly handled.

In many ways, Bev is the hub around which much of this behind-the-scenes work revolves. We’re proud to work with EcoFriendly Foods and grateful for the integrity and excellence they bring to every step of the process. We think you’ll taste the difference — and agree.

Farming Is More Than Animals and Equipment—It’s About Community

Farming isn’t just about the animals or the equipment. It’s about the community and culture that bind it all together. The relationships we build through this way of life are just as important as the food we produce.

A farmer would have a hard time standing alone without the support of an agrarian society. That’s why we want to shine a light on folks who share our values and play a vital role in this community.

There’s a lot that goes into raising livestock—long before you have the animals, you need infrastructure, supplies, and support equipment. But the reality of the journey doesn’t truly hit until the moment you feed that animal for the first time. We believe the food you eat is only as nutritious as the food it ate. That’s why the bags of feed we use say: “The food your food eats.”

Which brings me to the person I get my feed from—a close friend and family member, my cousin Daniel Austin, and his feed mill, Little Red Hen.

Daniel and I share a strong belief in sustainable agriculture and the impact it has on both our environment and the culture of our communities. Not only does Daniel grow his own grain, but he also sources from other local farmers who share those same values. Little Red Hen offers a full line of non-GMO feeds for all types of livestock, as well as hay, straw, minerals, oyster shell, grit, and more.

Daniel and his wife Sharon are passionate about wholesome, local food. Sharon often bakes fresh breads and desserts using flour milled from wheat grown right on their farm. You can also find flour, grits, and cornmeal for sale at their onsite farm store.

Be on the lookout 👀 in the coming days as we highlight some of those that make everything we do possible. When you buy from us you can rest assured that we try to keep as many of our farm dollars 💵 as local as possible. This goes for buying and selling.

We can start off by casting a little attention on the ones that keep our flocks protected. Iris is a 2 year old Anatolian who does her job very well. She only loves Kylie and Asher and at best tolerates me 🙂
Then we have Penny, she does great too but is part Great DisaPyrenees 😂 but for the most part she hangs around and loves on anybody that will give her a half second

A Little Spotlight on Someone Special

Meet Kylie 🩷 — our incredible farm hand who brings so much heart and energy to everything she does.
Every day, rain or shine, she's out there tending to the chickens, caring for the sheep, moving paddocks, and making sure every animal feels safe and loved.
Watching her work, you can see how much she truly cares — it's not just a job to her, it's a way of life. She's got a gift for noticing the little things that make a big difference, and we're so grateful to have her here on the farm.
Her kindness, hard work, and sunny spirit are part of what makes this place feel like home.
We couldn't do it without her!

Thank you, Kylie, for everything you do! 😊
