THESE PRECIOUS PIGLETS ARE Kunekune (pronounced "cooney cooney") are a small, docile breed of domestic pig known for their round bodies, short snouts, and unique chin tassels (piri piri). Originating in Asia, they are popular as pets and homestead animals due to their placid nature, intelligence, and ability to graze on grass, making them easier and cheaper to feed than other breeds. Their coat colors vary widely, and they are known for being affectionate and good with humans, though they still need proper care, companionship, and fencing.
Key Characteristics
Size: Small and compact, making them manageable for small farms and families.
Appearance: Round bellies, short legs, and short upturned snouts; coats can be silky or coarse and come in many colors (black, white, brown, gold, etc.).
Distinctive Feature: Most have one or more tassels (piri piri) hanging from their lower jaw.
Temperament: Docile, intelligent, affectionate, and sociable; they enjoy human interaction and belly rubs.
Foraging: Excellent grazers, eating grass and needing less supplemental feed than other pigs, though they still need a balanced diet.
Rooting: Tend not to root excessively if well-fed and have enough space, causing less damage to pastures.
Care and Management
Companionship: Must be kept in groups of at least two or three as they need companionship.
Shelter: Need a dry, draft-free shelter for protection from the elements.
Fencing: Require secure fencing, though they are less prone to escaping than other breeds.
Diet: Primarily graze on grass but benefit from supplemental pig pellets (12% protein minimum) and kitchen scraps (fruits/veggies).
Health: Susceptible to common swine diseases; overfeeding is a risk, leading to poor health.
As Pets and Livestock
Pets: Excellent pets due to their size and temperament, especially castrated males (barrows).
Meat: Produce good quality meat, and their smaller size makes them manageable for processing on a small scale.
