Last month, a new study revealed that only 16 percent of Americans are reading for pleasure, which represents a 40 percent drop from peak rates just over a decade ago. (Terrifyingly, people are reading to their children less and less, too.) With technology waging a war on our attention spans, it can easily feel harder and harder to make the time to spend with a book — and easier to buckle and give into distractions.

Banned Books Week kicks off Sunday. Read something great with your kids to celebrate — maybe one of my Maximum Ride books, which have been banned here and there. Parents should absolutely take an active role in deciding what their children read. But no one should get to decide what other people’s kids read — yours, mine, or otherwise. . ⚠️ The White House just released a budget proposal that would fully eliminate the only agency dedicated to library services, IMLS, in the next fiscal year starting October 1.

This would deny economic opportunity and information access to people across the country, especially those in rural communities who rely on federal library funding.

We need library supporters across the nation to get involved right away.
