Zeller Schwarze Katz (Zell's Black Cat) is a vineyard area (Grosslage) around Zell/Mosel, Germany. The "father of the Black Cat" is the winemaker Peter Anton in Zell. It is said that in 1863 wine merchants from Aachen could not decide between three barrels after an extensive wine tasting in his cellar. A black cat had sneaked into the cellar, jumped on and defended one of the three barrels with hissing and scratching. The wine merchants bought the barrel which was so vehemently "defended" by the cat. The sale of this wine was such a success that the traders later bought all the wines of the corresponding vineyard location.
