Brothers Allan and Rodion Gordenker founded Gordenker Turkey Farm in 1941. The initial parcel consisted of 26 acres in the heart of Glen Ellen – a narrow strip of property between Trinity Road and Highway 12. The farm was then fully involved in producing the then-common Bronze turkey, selling its meat under contract to the armed forces in order to help with the war effort. In 1955 Allan and his be
loved wife Sara Leonor became sole owners of the farm and purchased an adjacent property from the Weise family. The farm swiftly grew to 35,000 turkeys, producing eggs for Nicholas Turkey Breeding Farms. Two quarries were established in the 90’s producing decorative rhylotic flagstone and golden-orange shale. The vineyard was planted in 1999 by Phil Coturri and was established to supply grapes to Benziger. Originaly 14 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted but 8 acres had to be pulled out due to diseased rootstock. The Mayacamas fire department has a yearly event on a beautiful site under oaks on the ranch. In 2010 the flagstone quarry closed due to council restrictions. In 2011 Allan and Sarah Leanor’s granddaughter, Michele arrived back to the ranch after studying and working in the wine industry in New Zealand. She came with Tom, whom she married on the ranch event site, with a mind to bring the Gordenker Ranch back to life. Michele and Tom took over management of the vineyard in 2012 and continued to sell to Benziger although taking a hand picked part of the vineyard for production of the first Gordenker Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2013 Tom worked with George MacLeod’s grandson Ben at Arrowood Winery. We were introduced to the MacLeod family and their amazing Sauvignon Blanc fruit that they grow on their stunning property. We automatically fell in love with the fruit and land and are very happy with our 2013 Gordenker MacLeod Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc. You will see us more of us, and our fantastic products, in the community in the coming months.
