Why does local food often cost more than grocery store food?
Because local food is usually the true cost of food.

Much of the large-scale industrial food system is heavily subsidized through government programs - from commodity crops to transportation, fuel, and production support. Those subsidies help keep prices artificially low at the checkout line.

Local farmers and small producers often don’t receive those same advantages. They’re paying real costs for feed, seed, labor, equipment, land, processing, and time - all on a much smaller scale.

Cheap food may feel convenient in the moment, but someone always pays the difference somewhere:
• the farmer
• the soil
• the animals
• the worker
• the community
• or our long-term health

When you buy local, you’re not just buying food. You’re investing in your neighbors, your local economy, fresher products, and a food system built closer to home.

Local food isn’t overpriced.
It’s often the first honest price food has had in a long time.
