In your week 3 share, you received a half t-shirt bag of baby kale mix, six heads of lettuce, four heads of Asian greens, basil, scallions (green onions), zucchini, turnips, radish, beets, kohlrabi, and rhubarb. The 5 bags of produce is a bit much but it is the end of season for the tender greens and they will live better in your fridge than outside this week.

What is it? The radish is a pink Japanese variety, so in shape it looks like a beet, but it is lighter in color on the outside and white on the inside.

What to Expect: The lettuce and radishes are done for the season now with this heat wave. We anticipate having Asian Napa Cabbages next week. Kale looks like it will continue on strong. Soon upcoming, and probably already for week 4, will be broccoli and zucchini with cucumbers, beans, and peas close after.

What to Make: with the romaine lettuce leaves, salad wrap/boats are on the menu. I made egg salad boats and plan to make tuna salad boats. Make sure to enjoy your favorite salads before it's gone, which for our house is taco salad. Asian greens can be enjoyed fresh or cooked. I stir fry mine to have a contrast to all the fresh salad meals. Tatsoi in peanut sauce, chow mein with zucchini and scallions (and leftover garlic scapes), and just fried in butter are three go to ways to make our Asian greens. This radish and kohlrabi, while they can be steamed or deep fried, are so fresh and young that I suggest slicing thin on salad or eating as crunchy snacks with Celtic grey salt.
Happy Eating,

Thank you all for picking up your produce. In your share you received a bag of lettuce, a bag of kale, a bag of Asian greens, a bag of garlic scapes, and 8 stalks of rhubarb.

We are nearly exclusively growing heirloom seeds and most of them come from Baker Creek farm, a lovely family saving seeds in Missouri. Baker Creek posts many great recipes. You can search things like "Baker Creek Savory Rhubarb Recipes" to find things like Rhubarb Spinach Curry. For my gluten free, sugar free, and/or adventurous eaters may I suggest experimenting with savory Rhubarb recipes. I haven't gotten up the courage to do so yet, but see them on-line like savory rhubarb and bacon compote.

Lettuce: wash ASAP and refrigerate airtight for at least 2 hours to crispen up. To wash, I cut the bottom off to separate the leaves and remove any outer leaves that look dry/weather because they disintegrate faster. Sometimes I save those for freezing for green smoothies.

Asian greens today are tatsoi, two baby bok choy, pak boy/large bok choy, and mizuna. I stir fry them all. I do think the sweetness of the tatsoi goes especially nice with Thai peanut sauce style stir fry.
