Did you know that some aquatic vegetation treatments can be performed without obtaining a permit when certain conditions are met?

We're currently treating several of our ponds with TryMarine as part of out long-term pond management program. By using an approved product and following the Michigan EGLE requirements, we're working towards qualifying under Code 49, which streamlines future vegetation management while still protecting our waterways in Michigan.

If CODE 49 is fully implemented by the State of Michigan, it could also open the door for management of public waters more efficiently-potentially allowing approved treatment of muck and excess organic buildup in a more streamlined and environmentally responsible way.

Healthy ponds don't happen by accident. Proper vegetation management helps improve water quality, fish habitat, and the overall health of the pond ecosystem. Taking the time to do things the right way now helps ensure we can continue providing healthy, high-quality fish for years to come.

Day Zero.

I wanted to document the condition of the ponds before we begin our treatment and restoration plan. These videos show exactly what we are working with: heavy aquatic vegetation, years of organic material, and significant muck buildup that has accumulated over time.

Laggis’ Fish Farm is working with SOLitude Lake Management to begin a long-term pond management plan. The goal is not just to make the ponds look better, but to improve pond health, water quality, fish habitat, and long-term manageability for the farm.

Part of this project will include vegetation treatment, along with an innovative muck-reduction approach focused on breaking down built-up organic material. We will also be documenting the process closely as this type of treatment is reviewed in Michigan and as we work through the proper regulatory steps.

This farm has been here since 1979, and these ponds have supported a lot of fish over the years. Now it is time to start bringing them back into better condition, one step at a time.

I’ll be using these posts to log the progress — the good, the bad, and the muddy — as we work toward healthier, cleaner, more manageable ponds for the future of Laggis’ Fish Farm.
