Yes. On June 12, 2026, Mark Zuckerberg announced that [Meta](https://www.meta.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com) will provide free Ray-Ban Meta AI smart glasses to every legally blind U.S. veteran. The program is being conducted with the Blinded Veterans Association and other veteran-support groups. More than 130,000 legally blind veterans are expected to qualify.
What the glasses can do
The Ray-Ban Meta glasses use cameras, microphones, speakers, and AI to help users:
Read printed text, menus, mail, and documents aloud.
Describe surroundings and identify objects.
Assist with navigation and daily tasks.
Answer questions about what the wearer is looking at.
Provide hands-free assistance without holding a phone.
Why Meta is doing this
The initiative was inspired in part by blind veterans who found the glasses helpful for independence and everyday activities. Meta says the program will also include training and support so veterans can learn how to use the technology effectively.
Who qualifies?
Current reports indicate the program is intended for legally blind U.S. military veterans. Training, webinars, and in-person assistance are expected to be available through partner organizations.
Eligibility
A veteran generally qualifies if they:
Are a U.S. military veteran (or currently serving in some cases through partner programs).
Are blind or have significant vision loss/low vision.
Meet the eligibility requirements for membership in the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA). BVA recently expanded eligibility to veterans who qualify for VA Blind Rehabilitation Services.
