In Memory of Dog (Red) π
In April of 2020, during the l9ckdown and pandemic, my husband found himself furloughed due to health reasons. He needed something to focus on, a project to put energy into, and that's how our chicken adventure began.
At the very beginning of that adventure was Dog.
Yes, Dog
A chicken named Dog
She was our very first chicken and the one that made me into the crazy chicken lady I am today!
Dog wasn't just a chicken! She was a survivor, an explorer, a troublemaker, and a beloved member of our family. She lived through countless predator scares, somehow managing to outsmart every dog, raccoon, or skunk related incident that came her way. She made the big journey with us from Utah to Oregon and spent her retirement years living the good life on our little farm.
If you ever called for the dogs, Dog would come running too. After all, her name was Dog, and she took that responsibility seriously.
She was infamous for chasing people down to peck at their toes, especially our daughters, and she never seemed to understand personal space.
Every now and then she even decided she was rooster material, standing tall and attempting her own version of a cock-a-doodle-doo. It wasn't very convincing, but she gave it her all!
At six years old, Dog lived a long and happy life. She watched our farm grow from a handful of chickens living in a city into the flock we have today. She saw babies hatch, had duck friends, watched new animals arrive, and seasons come and go. βοΈβοΈππ·
Lately, she had been slowing down. The last three nights she chose to sleep outside instead of with the flock, almost as if she knew her journey was coming to an end. This morning, we said goodbye.
Today, Dog has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, where in our animal loving hearts she's reunited with old flock mates and our sweet Brixley.
We like to think she's still running when someone calls the dogs, still pecking toes, and still trying to convince everyone she's actually a rooster.
Thank you for being the first, Dog/Chicken.
You started something special here.
You will be missed, big girl. π
