Trust me, if anyone provides scientific proof that an herb actually treats or cures a chicken disease, I would be the first one shouting it from the roof tops! Yes, there is some progress being made in the commercial poultry industry that shows some promising effects from herbal treatments. HOWEVER! And I capitalize HOWEVER because this is a big problem I see with the claims out there on chicken blogs and chicken forums when it comes to bogus claims. There is a heck of a lot more to it than just sprinkling a few herbs in their nesting box or in their food. "Usually the incorporation of herbs directly in the diet is not potent or efficient enough to make any difference in the bird." - Ronette Gehring, BVSc, MMedVet (Pharm), Dipl. ACVCP Department of Anatomy and Physiology Institute of Computational Comparative Medicine College of Veterinary Medicine Kansas State University. In the studies I have read and have had shared with me, the herb must me delivered in liquid form via the drinking water, and in many cases, like oregano, they must me combined with other minerals, amino acids, and even other ingredients in order for the bird to even utilize the oregano successfully. It's way beyond just buying some pizza oregano at the store and sprinkling it on the chicken's feed. A good example of this is Yogurt. Chickens do not have the necessary enzymes in their gut to properly digest dairy products. Store bought yogurt does not have enough good bacteria to do anything beneficial for the bird. However, there is plenty of crap in store bought yogurt your birds don't need like HFCS, Sugar, Artificial Flavors and Colors. And at about $1.00 per cup, that would be $30,00 per month of wasted money if you gave them a cup every day. And, you are doing nothing to benefit them. However, you could purchase a probiotic specifically designed for poultry for about $20.00 per month you add to their water, that would actually benefit your flock. Save money, and actually help your birds!
