We got piggies! Technically, two Idaho Pasture Pig (IPP) feeder pigs. Meet Bacon and Grits! They will provide our family and others some extremely healthy meat. I am so happy to think that we will be able to have happy pork in the coming future!

In the meantime, we love them so much already. Giving them their best life is our highest priority.

Proud of my ladies who are still producing through winter. I feel a little like a drug dealer lately.

The morning after a snowstorm is always so pretty. A bright, sharp kind of beautiful.

We did something new and processed a goat today.

We bought 2 meat goats recently and are adding one to our existing herd. The other became practice.

Chris did a marvelous job of dispatch and I broke down the meat. Things went extremely well. Curry soon!

Claire has successfully had her second litter! 6 AKC puppies in total, 2 black females, 2 black males, and 2 black and tan males. She was mated to Judah, an all black long coated dog. Both parents are extremely friendly toward people and highly biddable so these are very likely to be some excellent family companions!

Mom and babies are doing fantastic and puppies can be reserved by contacting Linda at High Country German Shepherds.

I often wonder if they conspire on what their desired sleep positions are before they lay down. It's very funny how the boys mirror each other and then the ladies tend to mirror each other.

It finally happened - a totally unexplained death on the farmstead.

One of my three Favorelles roosters recently passed and we will never know why for sure. In the morning he was fine and then several hours later, dead. We did an autopsy and found nothing wrong, not even a broken neck. The weather has been hot and smokey due to wildfires recently.

I think the poor bird had a heart attack from heat, poor air quality and just living at an elevation their body type might not be best suited to. We are actively watching for any other deaths, which could mean some sort of contagious pathogen, but so far everyone else is normal.

It's probably one of the hardest parts of having livestock - you are guaranteed to at some point have dead stock and you might never know why it died. Living with the uncertainty is tough; could I have done something different to prevent it? Was he just an ill-formed bird? Ultimately it seems all you can do is use the knowledge we have at hand and hope we can learn more to improve for the future.
