The picking machine! In traditional European hop farming and the resurgence in smaller hop farms in the midwest and beyond, the WOLF company hop picking machine is the industry standard and used almost exclusively. Rated in bines per hour, there are 170's and 180's, 280's, 500's, and 1000's, veritcals and most commonly horizontals. Our farm started off with a 170 (sourced from Poland) and after a few years and plans to double our acerage, we upgraded to a 280 (Slovenia). The plants are loaded onto a "hook" then pulled through a series of stripping wheels, drums covered in stripping fingers that strip all the leaves and hops from the string and bine as it is pulled through. The material then falls vertically past a chain screen where fans are used to suck leaves away from the material before it then continues on to a series of tumble belts similar to a treadmill. There, the hops cones roll down the belts while everything else is carried up and away, with a chopper that cuts up the bine, sidearms, string that remains after being stripped. The finished product is a nearly leaf and stem free hop cone that is then carried onto the driers. At our farm, we typically have two loaders, a machine operator, and a quality inspector that pulls rogue leaves, brown cones, caterpillars, etc. before the hops continue onto the driers! 🍻 Video in the comments! 🤠🍻

The bine loader and harvest wagon! This piece of equipment is responsible for bringing in every single hop bine from the field using just one person. The plants are cut near the ground while driving through a hop row. The plants then travel in a track chain until they reach the breaker wheel at the back of the tractor, the tractor speed and track timing are synced up so that the hop plant is stretched out taunt over top of the harvest wagon before the top rope breaks from being pulled and the plant lands in the trailer. The trailer also has a special floor that helps convey the piles of hops onto the floor near the picking machine for the machine loaders.. on a typical day we will do 15-20 trailer loads of hops!
