Happy National Kale Day! 🥬

Let us introduce you to all the organic kales we grow! This highly nutritious leafy green has come a long way from its days as a meager garnish. Salads, soups, chips. So many ways to enjoy this nutrient dense green.

Baby kale in Arizona 👶

We grow bulk organic baby kale that we sell to our customers (processors) that blend it into their custom bagged salad mixes.

Soft texture and crunchy, edible stems!

Kale microgreens are a great option for folks that want more bioavailable nutrients without the bulk of insoluble fiber. These can be easier on the gut to digest.

Lacinato Kale / Black Kale / Dino Kale / Tuscan Kale- so many names for everyone’s favorite kale. 🇮🇹

This is a winner for salads! Buttery soft texture and deep blue-green in color. It has a mild flavor with a slight nuttiness and is less bitter than curly kale.

Doesn’t get more classic than this variety of kale! Green curly kale holds up well when cooked and is great for kale chips!

Red curly kale grown in New York.♥️

Stunning deep purple stems and veins run thoughout the leaves. It is similar in flavor and use to the green curly kale but it has more antioxidants due to the natural shades of purple and red.

And that we educated thousands of school kids on where their food came from. 🧒 🥕

We hosted birthday parties, school field trips, farm tours, and festivals like the Cool Corn & Melon Festival. 🌽 🍉

If you grew up in Phoenix in the ‘90s or 2000s, there’s a good chance you came to Duncan Family Farms and dug some potatoes in our U-pick. 🪏 🥔

Meet Chris Cox, our new CEA Manager! 🌱

Chris studied nutrition at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s School of Agriculture before moving into hands-on growing. Over the years he’s specialized in greenhouse horticulture and grown crops across a wide range of climate zones, experience he now brings to our Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) program.

CEA means growing in enclosed, tech-driven spaces where climate, lighting, and irrigation are precisely managed. For our microgreens, that means year-round harvests that look and taste great, no matter what the weather’s doing outside.

It’s a very different world from traditional field farming. Instead of seasons and acres, Chris works with shallow trays that go from seed to harvest on average, 14 days. That fast, high-density setup gets the most out of every square foot of our greenhouse, but it also creates a very humid environment, so tight climate control and strict sanitation are essential.

On a typical day, Chris oversees the whole production pipeline: monitoring germination, adjusting climate controls, and managing seeding, daily crop care, and harvest schedules.

Welcome to the team, Chris! 🙌

Agronomists are like plant and soil doctors. 🥼🚜🌱They diagnose pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and pathogens before they become big problems. A camera roll full of bizarre plants and insects comes with the job. 📸🦠

Fall looks pretty different at each of our DFF farms. 🍂🍁🍃 Every location has its own prime growing season, but right now, we have crops in the ground at all three!

From Arizona to Oregon to New York, autumn is in the air! 🍁

We grow one of the sweetest gold beet varieties, the Badger Flame Beet 🤩

And this year, we added its rounder cousin to the farm, the Badger Spark!

So naturally, we had to put these two beets to the test against a traditional red beet. 🫜

Using a refractometer, we’re checking the Brix (sugar) levels to see which beet comes out on top. 👀

Fun Fact: the reason they have “Badger” in their name is because they were bred by Dr. Irwin Goldman from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Bucky Badger is their mascot! Such a great guy, such a great beet! 🦡🫶

👋 No more chopping up cilantro 🙅‍♀️🔪🌿 just use cilantro microgreens instead! They are tiny, flavorful, and nutrient packed!

No chop, just top! 😏

We love seeing where the beets we grow end up. ❤️🌱

Our first set of organic red beets from our New York farm were processed last week at the Love Beets facility in Rochester, NY. In the next few days, you’ll start seeing the finished products on shelves at Costco, Sprouts, Wegmans and other retailers.

We’re proud to be an organic grower partner for Love Beets! 🫜
