This heifer calf was a twin, and her mama wouldn’t take both. Right around the same time, one of our cows lost both her twins during birth.
So we put them together. She claimed her right away and has been raising her like her own ever since.
Today they headed out to join the herd. Turned out to be a good match for both of them.

New cattle can’t just join the herd, there’s a pecking order, and strangers get pushed around. So they meet through the fence first, sort it out, then share a field in peace.
The same patience goes into everything we raise.

Turns out my wife makes a pretty good calf.
Calving season’s coming, which means catching newborns to tag and check them. It’s harder than it looks, so we practice. She volunteered… mostly.

Every beef stick we sell came off this farm. Not a co-packer, not a blend of whoever’s beef was cheapest that month. Our cattle, our grass, start to finish.
We’re priced right alongside the big brands, the ones that don’t raise a single animal.

This isn’t her calf. She had twins last week and lost them both. Another cow had twins and only took one so the second one had no mother. So we grafted her over. Head catch, patience, and time. They don’t take a strange calf easy, but once she nurses she’ll usually claim her. One cow had no calf. One calf had no mother. Now they both have what they needed.

Nobody tells you the real skill in farming is adapting. Every day the plan falls apart and you figure it out anyway. First-generation, still learning, wouldn’t trade it. Grass-fed beef from cattle we raise ourselves in VA. Link in bio.

Broken mower, no problem. Toren’s got it handled.
This is the stuff you can’t teach in a classroom. Kids on a farm learn responsibility because the work doesn’t wait.
Proud papa moment.
