Clean the carder day. We just carded up a lot of dyed wools. Now to pick out each and every dyed fiber so no one gets any unwanted bright colors mixed into their natural fiber.
It is very important to have the first fiber threw the clean carder being white. This makes the bace layer white. So when I clean the drums any fiber that gets left behind is white. Just imagine if I carded up hot pink first, stray pink fibers would shed out in all the next runs! Starting with white also allows me to do a "clean run" and go back to (almost pure) whites fairly easy without needing to pull the whole carder apart to clean it.
See all the bunny dander in the close up? This time I started with white bunny fiber. Even after carding many weeks there are still white bunny fiber and dander in the teeth! The same happens if I start with a chaffy fleece, the chaff and yuck get imbeded in the teeth.
