🌱 Greenhouse Plant Sale

Many of the plants in our greenhouse have reached the point where they’re ready for a little more elbow room. Annuals, herbs, and vegetable plants can only stay in their nursery containers for so long before their roots begin looking for more space, so we’ve marked all flowering annuals, herbs, and veggie plants 25% off to help them make the move from our greenhouse to your garden.

Whether you’re filling containers, refreshing flower beds, or planting a vegetable garden, now is a great time to stock up on healthy, well-established plants.

And don’t forget the soil! We carry bagged potting mixes, compost, and mulches, along with bulk compost, soil, mulch, and Sweet Peet for larger projects. Good plants deserve a good start, and we’re happy to help you choose the right products for your garden.

One of my favorite parts of writing our weekly newsletter is sharing little pieces of local history and family stories that don’t always make it onto social media.

Last week’s “From the Files” feature highlighted a 1938 telephone directory from my dad’s estate, complete with an advertising tag for Torrington Creamery — a business that was once owned and operated by the Weigold family. Along with the old advertisements, the directory included instructions for using a dial telephone and even party line etiquette. A reminder that every generation has had to learn new technology.

Each week, our newsletter includes farm updates, what’s blooming in the fields, fresh arrivals in the farm store, upcoming events, and occasional glimpses into local history and the stories that connect our family to this corner of Connecticut.

If you’d like a little more than what fits on social media, we’d love to have you join us. You’ll find the link on our website — https://northernctfarm.com — or in our bio.

🧺 From Brooke’s Basket

From favorite pantry finds to easy meal ideas, Brooke’s Basket is a weekly look at what Brooke’s currently loving around the farm store.

This Week’s Pick: Twin Pines Farm Sour Dill Pickle Chips

I am obsessed with these pickles! They pair well with so many things we carry at the farm. My favorite simple snack is these pickles with Cabot Hunters Cheddar Cheese, but they’re also perfect on one of our beef burgers with a slice of Cabot Hunters on top.

I also never let the pickle juice go to waste — once the jar is finished, I use it to make pickled quail eggs with the quail eggs we carry at the farm. Another favorite snack of mine!

🐖 If you stop by the farm this weekend, be sure to meet some of our newest regenerative workers. We recently brought a few pigs over from our other farm to start clearing an overgrown section of the back field. The area already has several large mature trees, which should eventually make for a great shady spot for the cows during the heat of summer.

If you’d like to see them, just stop by the sales counter and we’ll point you in the right direction.

An excerpt from our weekly newsletter…

📜 From the Files (written by Cara)

My dad was a collector of anything and everything — newspapers, tools, car parts, and mysterious gadgets that require my sister and me to turn to Google Lens for help identifying. And of course, he rarely threw anything away. As we’ve been sorting through his estate, we’ve come across all kinds of interesting pieces of local history tucked away.

One recent find was this 1953 Goshen Fair premium book featuring a nationwide crochet contest with cash prizes, trips to New York City, and even national exhibitions for winning entries. Hard to imagine a crochet contest drawing that kind of attention today, but it says a lot about how important homemaking and handicrafts were at the time.

The contest may be long gone, but the Goshen Fair’s tradition of creativity, competition, and community is still going strong.

🍔🌶️ An Easy Win for the Holiday Weekend

Memorial Day weekends don’t always bring perfect grilling weather… but they do call for easy dinners.

We’ve added beef patties to our Weigel Farmers Collective lineup — available fresh and frozen this weekend.

A convenient option for last-minute plans, these patties are made from beef sourced through Richard’s trusted network of farmers — selected with the same care and standards we bring to everything in our farm store. Grill them outside if the weather cooperates… or keep dinner simple indoors.

Also in the case this weekend: Garlic Jalapeño & Cheese Beef Sausage.

Bold, savory, and exceptionally good, these beef sausages are packed with garlic, jalapeño, and melty cheese for just the right balance of flavor and heat. Perfect for the grill, quick dinners, or sliced into your favorite summer dishes.

Fair warning: the sausage may be dangerously addictive.

This Week’s Pick: NY Strip Steak

NY Strip Steak is tender, juicy, and SO flavorful. Northern Farms meat never disappoints, but this may honestly be the best NY Strip I’ve ever had! My husband — who loves a good steak — completely agrees.

All it needed was salt and pepper to let the flavor shine. I pan-seared it in a cast iron skillet over high heat, but it would be just as perfect on a hot grill.
Rain or shine, this is such an easy meal to make and a great option for the holiday weekend!
