Poking around in an “attic” (which is basically an open area above our bedroom).

I found, what I believe, is another up-cycled piece of a shipping or dry goods grocery crate.

This board is wedged between 2 beams. It looks as though the start of a floor was underway but never finished.

Many during this house’s lifetime recycled and reused whatever wood pieces were available for around-the-house projects.

Anyone familiar with “B & M”? 🤔

One of my (Ann) biggest concerns is how much food waste we have as a society.

We do not eat away from home but maybe once or twice a year. Everything I make (most of the time from scratch).

Any leftovers always get turned into something else to make them “new”.

It is a busy time for us on the farm, but when isn’t it?! 😉. And when we are busy it gets difficult to make meals a priority.

This was a super easy and quick dinner to pull together.

I made a homemade Mac n cheese with protein pasta, used a frozen half pound of taco meat I had precooked a couple of weeks ago.

BOOM!
Dinner is served and there are yummy leftovers for lunch the next day 😊

I took the weekend off from treasure hunting and exploring to run our little farm stand; thank you to everyone who stopped by and supported us it was a great first weekend and we will be open again this weekend!

Today I have returned to my digging, not far from my larger site that had charcoal.

I found this oxen shoe! It probably dates to around 1800, it is hand forged and has the characteristics and irregularities of something that was handmade almost 250 years ago.

It is quite rusty; if you zoom in you can see a top/bottom nail hole on each oval shaped side.

I have been searching for the original outhouse/trash dump.

The location where I am currently digging has proved to be interesting if nothing else.

I’ve been finding lots of hand forged square and rose head nails, which would be consistent with the time period of the construction of the house.

It was very common for early settlers to use their privy/outhouse as a dump of all unwanted items, as well as ashes from cooking and heating.

They may have also used ash to contain odor or lit fires in the pit to burn off the offending smells, to consolidate and to keep using for a longer period of time.

I am collecting all of the smaller items I have been finding and I think I will make a display of them for our little farm store. The history of our property is long and so fascinating!

It was called a “felling axe” that would have most likely been used daily for felling/cutting down timber on a homestead.

*Fun fact:

🤔 During the late 1700s New Hampshire was a main source of timber for the Royal Navy (white pine)

Recipe Friday!
Quick & EASY Homemade Nachos 😋

This has been on repeat at least every other week all summer as it is super fast and easy to pull together for a quick dinner!

Ingredients:
1lb burger
1 chopped medium onion
1 bag of tortilla chips
1 bunch of green onions
Season with chili powder/cumin/onion powder/oregano/smoked paprika s&p
(Or use an seasoning packet)
As much cheese as your ❤️ says to use, any kind

Make:
Brown burger in a skillet then add chopped onion, cooking until onion is desired consistency.

In a 9x13 pan make a layer of tortilla chips
Spoon some of the hamburger mixture on to the chips and top with grated cheese
Repeat layers of chips/burger/cheese until there is none left.

Top pan with a layer of cheese
Bake @ 350* until cheese bubbly.

Serve with sour cream (I use plain yogurt), salsa, chopped olives, chopped green onions or anything else you like to.

The Farmhouse at Smith's Hidden Acres will be open this weekend!

This weekend's offerings are:

* Big Ol' Chocolate Chip Cookies (Thick, chewy & loaded with chips)

* Farmhouse Banana Minis (Soft, fluffy & packed with real banana goodness - just the right size for a treat)

* Harvest Zucchini Cheddar Scones (Fresh from the garden zucchini & rich cheddar cheese)

* Summer Tomato Basil Scone
(Savory, bursting with flavor, topped with fresh grated Parmesan cheese)

We also have a selection of jams/ jellies as well as various handmade sheep milk soaps, tallow body products, body wash and other goodies for you!

Weather permitting, we may have some farm friends for you to visit with!

Everything is made fresh, by me (Ann) with our beautiful vintage
