I’m sorry this post is too late for some that have called about picking strawberries. Our strawberries died during the drought last summer. I thought I would get another year with those plants but I didn’t. Our field is being over run by wild sweet potato and thistle weeds. I’ve got to do some serious eradication methods this year before I can plant anymore strawberries. Our blackberries took a big hit over the winter with that cold vortex we had around Christmas. Temperatures below zero and high winds kill next years canes which produces the new crop. So blackberries are about 80% loss this year. I do have a fall blackberry but it all depends on the rains we get in August. The one crop we will have is black raspberries which also took a hit but not as hard as the blackberries and they should be in peak around the end of next week.
I’m sorry I’m late in reporting our crop losses and what is available but we have been very busy since the tornado hit our neighborhood on 3/31/23. Our farm house was not hit but my niece which lives by us took a direct hit and I’ve been helping her and other neighbors clean up as much as I can.
I did receive a swarm of bees and caught a swarm in one of my traps. So there may be some honey this summer. Time will tell. By the way if anyone happens upon a honey bee swarm let us know cause we can capture them and help make them a new home. Thanks. Well thats the farm report for now.

What a great turnout for yesterday's strawberry U-pick! Lots of recent rain and summer-like weather have combined to create great growing conditions. We still have lots of ripe strawberries in the field. As such, we will be open for U-picking again today, Sunday, May 29th from 4:00PM to 7:PM.

We also have persimmon pulp, frozen blackberries and homemade raspberry jelly for sale. Call us for questions (812) 876-5462. Bob and Gail Payton, Texas Ridge Farms.

With these last 3 days of rain and warm temperatures, the strawberries should be ripening well. We will know more after we get in the fields to check them tomorrow morning. As such, we are planning to open up for U-pickers tomorrow, (Saturday May 28th) from 4:00PM to 7:00PM. The weather promises to be clear and warm! Give us a call at 812-876-5462 if you have questions. Bring a container to take your berries home.

We will also have available homemade jams and jellies made with our own fruit, as well as sweet pickle relish, frozen blackberries and persimmon pulp. In addition, we will have samples of our (super, easy-to-make) warm black berry sauce for cobbler or to serve over ice cream or on pancakes.

The weather outlook sounds like the perfect day to come out to the weekend's Farmers' Market in Spencer tomorrow, July 31st from 08:30 to 12:00. We are supposed to have temps in the upper seventies, and very low humidity. Location is in the gravel parking next door to the Babbs' grocery.

This week we are bringing tomatoes (including several heirloom types), blackberries, jams and jellies made with our own fruit. As always, we do not use any sprays or chemicals on our produce. We will also have our sweet onions and persimmon pulp. Once again, we will be making homemade chocolate ice cream, as well as vanilla home made ice cream sundae topped off with warm blackberry sauce. Hope to see you there!

What a great day at the Farmers' Market today. Thanks to all of you for coming out despite the hot, humid weather.

Owen county Farmers' Market will be open as usual tomorrow, July 24th from 08:30 to 12: 00 and is located next to the Babbs' grocery store in Spencer.

We will have fresh tomatoes just harvested this evening on our farm. We grow many different varieties, including heirlooms. See us at the market or give us a call if you are interested in buying volume tomatoes to can or freeze. Our onions are still available as well. I made fresh SALSA with our tomatoes, onions and peppers this week and YUM! The onions are very sweet.

Our blackberries continue to thrive and produce many large sweet berries. It has been more than 3 years since we have had the right growing conditions to have such a good crop. Stop by our booth tomorrow to see our revised pricing. We will be glad to give you a copy of our blackberry sauce recipe with your purchase.

It is supposed to be warm tomorrow, so stop and cool off with a serving of our homemade chocolate ice cream or our homemade vanilla ice cream with warm blackberry sauce.

We will also be selling persimmon pulp, our homemade jams, jellies, and sweet pickle relish made from our crops that we grow without chemicals.

Thanks to all of you who came out to our farm for the U-Pick blackberries on Tuesday evening. We are having another U-Pick open date on this Sunday evening, July 25th from 4:00-6:30 PM. Blackberries are easy to pick with no thorns, no bending over and nice plump berries.

Thanks for your support this past Saturday at the Owen County Farmers' Market. We have been blessed with our Blackberry harvest this year. The plants have produced an abundance of the delicious plump berries. As always, our food is grown without harmful chemicals.

We will be opening up our farm for blackberry U-pick, tomorrow, Tuesday, July, 20th from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Blackberries are easy to pick and the large fruit fills your bucket very quickly. They grow on bushes at eye level, so no strained back from bending over. Perhaps the best thing is they have NO thorns!

It is not too early to think about the fall holidays. A holiday with a blackberry cobbler would be great! I have the easy recipe for just that and would gladly share if interested. So stop by and get some berries for the freezer.

Hope to see you here tomorrow. Remember to bring a container to carry your berries home.
