I’m sorry this post is too late for some that have called about picking strawberries. Our strawberries died during the drought last summer. I thought I would get another year with those plants but I didn’t. Our field is being over run by wild sweet potato and thistle weeds. I’ve got to do some serious eradication methods this year before I can plant anymore strawberries. Our blackberries took a big hit over the winter with that cold vortex we had around Christmas. Temperatures below zero and high winds kill next years canes which produces the new crop. So blackberries are about 80% loss this year. I do have a fall blackberry but it all depends on the rains we get in August. The one crop we will have is black raspberries which also took a hit but not as hard as the blackberries and they should be in peak around the end of next week.
I’m sorry I’m late in reporting our crop losses and what is available but we have been very busy since the tornado hit our neighborhood on 3/31/23. Our farm house was not hit but my niece which lives by us took a direct hit and I’ve been helping her and other neighbors clean up as much as I can.
I did receive a swarm of bees and caught a swarm in one of my traps. So there may be some honey this summer. Time will tell. By the way if anyone happens upon a honey bee swarm let us know cause we can capture them and help make them a new home. Thanks. Well thats the farm report for now.
