We have been busy. Sorry I haven't posted more but things have been kind of stagnant around here. Grasshoppers annihilated the garden before it could even get started. Nearly all of this years, oops last years broilers are in the freezer. We are going to close down our pig operation. It will be easier to buy a feeder pig than to try and raise our own. But we will continue to feed out pigs for others. We will buy the pigs for them and maintain them here at the farm they will just pay a board bill covering the feed, water and care costs. The cows are doing well. We do need prayer for rain to fill stock tanks. We are getting very low where the cows are at. All the steers are spoken for now. Next crop due April. Goats are due in April too. Have a great New Year

We have been battling skunks in the chicken houses 2 of which have tested positive for Rabies. This is not a fun situation. We have around 20 feral cats that we will have to try and get vaccinated or put down. Not a pleasant deal. Meanwhile trying to get them corraled so they can be monitored for the next 90 days. Folks vaccinate your pets and working animals. Our cats do an excellent job keeping Rattle snakes away. We don't have mice or rats either. But the wildlife can pose a problem.

Getting ready for our broiler flock share again. We have tried other organic feeds to our dismay of slower growth and and end results of chickens who do not exhibit good health.

Most Organic feeds have soy as their main protein source. We have received feedback on chickens that we raised on other organic feeds and they were less than stellar. Even to the point that the broth made with them was cloudy and not clear. So our feeds will be either the Texas Naturals or Hugellands both have proven to be good feeds. But preference is Hugellands.

Any one interested in Freezer birds let me know so we can prepare for the season.

Okay, enough with the Texas 100 year Freezeout. Our water finally froze. We have at least 2 more days of this mess. We will have to haul water from the pond and heat on our rocket stove in the yard to water livestock and feed. We are having to make sure the horses are getting enough water to prevent colics. The pigs won't eat if they are thirsty. The cows won't eat either. So it is getting precarious with our management to keep everyone doing well. We will be starting a water catchment program to provide for the farm in emergencies since we do not have a well. At least the pond has water or should I say ice we can melt that. Keep warm. Other problem, rolling blackouts. Getting to be a real pain.

Finally getting things moving in the right direction. We'll be starting our broiler share (frying chickens) program again, early this spring.
Hopefully there will be some Berkshire piglets available for either youth show prospects or fine dining prospects. If all goes well piglets will be born in May.
