Emmitt Miller - Ranch Operations
Emmitt is a full-time hired hand at Topp Angus, helping with a little bit of everything around the ranch. From daily chores, feeding and doctoring cattle to fencing, haying, calving, working cattle, maintenance and sale preparation, there's rarely a shortage of things to do.
What he enjoys most is being around cattle every day, continuing to learn, and expanding his knowledge while still having a little fun along the way.
When evaluating cattle, foot quality and structure are at the top of his list.
“I think that is the starting point of making a great cow. Without that, the rest of the traits don't matter.”
This year, he's looking forward to watching the new calf crop hit the ground and develop, especially the calves sired by Topp Standard 4696, Topp Angus's high-selling bull from 2026.
Outside of the ranch, Emmitt enjoys hunting, fishing and racing dirt bikes.
Three words he'd use to describe Topp Angus:Determined. Invested. Dependable.

Meet Sienna Topp
Sienna is the daughter of Paul and Jess and she helps wherever she's needed around the ranch. From checking waters and feeding cattle and horses to vaccinating, branding, moving cattle to pasture and helping with weaning, she's involved in many of the jobs that keep the ranch moving.
Her favorite part of working on the ranch is working alongside her family and seeing the results of their hard work, especially when the calves are born and growing well.
When it comes to the cowherd, fertility is the trait she values most.
Outside of the ranch, Sienna is pursuing a degree in Sonography at Bismarck State College.
When asked what makes Topp Angus different, Sienna points to something that is at the heart of the operation:
“We are a first-generation ranching family. We have built it through our own hard work, dedication, and willingness to work together.”
Three words she'd use to describe Topp Angus:Hardworking. Family-oriented. Resilient.

Meet Austyn Schafer - Marketing/Operations
Austyn is a co-owner and partner to Hudson and works with Topp Angus as a Marketing & Communications Coordinator, helping tell the Topp Angus story through social media, the website, email marketing, and other communications.
What she enjoys most about Topp Angus is the family dynamic and the relationships and connections that come with being part of the operation.
When it comes to the cattle, disposition is a trait she values highly. As a family-run operation, having cattle that are good to work with is important—not only for the people working with them every day, but for the families and ranchers who ultimately take those cattle home.
Austyn believes what makes Topp Angus different is their dedication to proficiency, integrity, and family—a combination that shows up in both the way they handle their cattle and the way they do business.

Meet Hudson Topp - Partner
As a co-owner of Topp Angus and son to Paul and Jess, Hudson helps manage the day-to-day operation, from calving and breeding decisions to preparing sale bulls and everything in between.
What he enjoys most is working alongside his family toward common goals and continually challenging themselves to improve.
When it comes to cattle, Hudson puts a high value on fertility and predictability, building a cowherd that can perform year after year and consistently produce cattle that work for their next owner.
This year, he's especially excited about another set of Jigsaw sons, including flush brothers out of the 9044 cow, along with the first set of Lincoln sons.
And away from the cattle? You'll probably find him on a golf course.
Three words for Topp Angus: Consistent. Predictable. Performance.

Meet Holden Topp
Holden is a son of Paul and Jess and it is his 9th birthday today! Happy Birthday Holden! He can usually be found helping around the ranch with yard maintenance, dragging pens, and putting his skid steer skills to work. He's also becoming the ranch's photographer in training.
When it comes to cattle, Holden already knows what catches his eye. One of his favorites is a cow he likes for her straight back, good feet, and black color.
His favorite part of working at Topp Angus?
Working with his family and dragging pens.
Outside of the ranch, Holden enjoys playing baseball.

Meet Jessica Carlson - Partner

Jessica is Paul’s wife and an owner/operator at Topp Angus, working alongside Paul and the rest of the family to keep the ranch moving forward.
Her role covers a little bit of everything, from organizing and planning, financials and ordering supplies to assisting with marketing and working with the horses. Throughout the year, she is also the head of photography and catalog work, sale preparation, horse breeding and training, health protocols, nutrition, and planning for the future of the operation.
One of the things Jess enjoys most about Topp Angus is that they are always looking for ways to make things better. What started with Paul and Jess has grown into a family where everyone is encouraged to ask, “How can we make this life, business, cattle, horses, and world a better place?”
When it comes to cattle, Jess is very clear about what she looks for - Structure.
She believes that if a cow moves well and stays sound, there is so much more you can do with the other pieces of that animal. That has to be the foundation.
Jess also puts a huge emphasis on consistency. One of the things she's most excited about this year is the entire 2026 spring-born calf crop. Being able to look across a pen of cattle and see a consistent group of structurally correct, balanced animals with performance without sacrificing the maternal side is what makes all the work worthwhile.
That consistency is something Topp Angus takes a lot of pride in. With 86% of the 2026 calf crop making the bull pen or replacements, Jess feels that what customers see is what they get.

Meet Paul Topp - Founding Partner

Paul is the founder and co-owner of Topp Angus, where he oversees the business and works closely with the cattle, genetics, customers, and day-to-day operation of the ranch.
His role includes genetic analysis, marketing, feed planning, land management, customer relations, and the many decisions that go into keeping the operation moving forward.
One of the things Paul enjoys most about Topp Angus is working alongside his family and seeing the total commitment to quality and integrity from everyone involved.
When it comes to cattle, Paul's biggest priority is consistency in production.
Rather than swinging for the fences in one particular trait, the goal is to make small improvements across all traits to keep a balanced, productive cow with no holes.
As Paul puts it:
“If any mating has a hole in it, that hole carries through in a pedigree forever.”
That mindset is a big part of how genetic decisions are made at Topp Angus. Paul and the team spend a lot of time traveling, evaluating genetics, researching pedigrees, and analyzing the details behind a potential breeding decision.
For Paul, breeding comes before marketing.
This year, he's especially excited to see the Domain and Jigsaw first-calf heifers calve. The Standout females have already proven themselves, and the early results from Jigsaw and Domain are showing promise for udder quality and production.
Paul believes these young females are an important look at the direction of the program and is excited about what they could mean for the future of Topp Angus.
Three words he'd use to describe Topp Angus: Integrity. Consistency. Focused.
