The Homestead Farm Center Project, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization founded in 2014, is dedicated to opening opportunities to adults with disabilities to work, learn, live, and thrive in a rural farm setting. Located on 100 acres of the historic Thomas Steele farm in beautiful Taylor County, West Virginia, the farm center will offer training and experience in agricultural industries to young adult

s with developmental disabilites with an emphasis on those with autism spectrum disorders. In addition to working on the farm and learning to market farm products, participants will have access to recreational activities including fishing, hiking, weaving, woodworking, and gardening.

It was a beautiful day on the farm! We watered the garden, picked peas, weeded, and covered the blueberry bushes. In the afternoon we learned about papermaking and experimented with making our own paper.

New applications for the 2026 Summer Farm Trainee program are now being accepted and are due May 31. If you are 18 or older, and would like to work at Homestead Farm Center, contact us by email at [email protected] for more information. Trainees learn to garden, harvest, and prepare vegetables they grow themselves, work with small livestock, create farm crafts, and experience what's needed to operate a traditional West Virginia farm. You will receive a stipend of $15/day worked. Transportation provided on Fridays from the DAC in Fairmont. Come join us for a fun and activity filled summer at the Homestead Farm Center!
