My only hen from my hatched misfits that’s left. She turned 1 almost exactly 30 days ago and today I found her with 3 of her very own babies 🤯 The two black ones belong to her and Bantam Cochin and the yellow is definitely Big Roo. She is a silkie mixed with possibly red New Hampshire bantam (hence red face not black).

Hello All 👋🏻

Mother Hen here, sorry it’s been so long since there’s been a update or story. Life has kept me quite busy.

Fall is settling in and the feather babies are molting.

I know many choose to not let their babies molt by providing light, as the daylight hours disappear. I have learned between having quail and chickens that letting them molt in the early fall and providing light weeks later, they seem to have more of a pep in their step and seem happier during the winter, as their bodies got a break from laying.

It’s also a time that I can collect my favorite feathers to add to my collection. The boys and girls are almost done molting already so it’s time to work on the love shack 😅

In the course of chaos I received a BEAUTIFUL Americana Rooster. I have not been able to snap a great picture yet but he looks like the brother to this one below.

GORGEOUS!!! With his markings I plan on setting him up with the Americana girls and the reds and silvers/sapphires for hatching. Thankfully I have a a few people interested in babies so come spring they’ll have layers. 👍🏻 it’ll give me a trial run at breeding for specific colors and eggs.

I still have many of my bantams. Some have gone the way of the predators, which, when you live in the country where the Eagles, Hawks, Coyotes, Bears and Bob Cats play, it’s to be expected.

I unfortunately just lost Mr. Fluffy Pants (Mr. Cochin). My neighbor had become quite attached to seeing him running around, so I plan on surprising them with a cochin clutch come spring for fluffy enjoyment. ❤️

Miss Millie Fleur has filled out nicely and my serama turned out to be a BEAUTIFUL lil boy. Alpha Roo is still keeping the order and Mr. Jerk Face bantam is still a pretty jerk and probably the reason I’ve only lost one silke girl so far compared to the other hens.

Overall the feather babies are doing good.

As fall commences I will hopefully have weekly updates, product updates and stories to share. ❤️

From Mother Hen:

The past two weeks have been interesting to say the least. I returned home to find the quail covey was not secured and/or intentionally left open on the porch by someone other than me... The neighbors called to state that some of the feather babies had made it their way but did not survive 😭. At this time the quail portion of QGO is on hold while the larger feather babies become the primary focus as I can provide a niche of people very happy chickens, until a new covey can be obtained and secured from predators. I am heartbroken to say the least at losing all my lil fathered babies. These were all babies I had from 1/2weeks or less of age and they had survived quite a bit. I had recently discovered a feather sexed male was indeed laying eggs 😅 as my known beautiful grey female was not laying 2-3 eggs a day 😅

……..Then came the heat wave here in the PNW…Day 2 and I lost of one of my ‘strawberry n cream’ rescue Roos. It may have been age and heat or just heat, as my large rescue Roos are of unknown age. It peaked at over 110 that day 😳 Hit the next day and I found my beautiful black young cochin hen gone. She had just started laying pale green eggs, as she laid her daily egg then passed while still on it. No signs of any issues other than heat again 😭 I’ve made sure extra water and food is available to them all during this crazy weather cycle.

The 8 babies hatched at the beginning of May are now down to 6, but survived the heat wave thankfully and are a joy to watch grow, as they are my first barnyard mix. So far one for sure is pure white Silkie and there are two white silkie mixes. The beautiful tan baby I was most excited for somehow escaped or got nailed by a predator 2 weeks ago and the baby who was having a rough time didn’t make it…

Two of the silkie girls are brooding again and one has taken to sounding like what I imagine a tiny dinosaur to sound like, when I check her clutch 😂 With the excessive heat I was worried they wouldn’t make it, but screech at me they did when I felt for excess eggs each day 😂 so in about 2ish weeks we will see if the flock doth grow, as other Mother Hens are waiting patiently to adopt new babies. 🥰

The first round of babies from February have started laying so once the silkies are done being brooding fluffy Dino’s, we will have an abundance of eggs available.

Annnnnnd once the Love Shack is created, we will be able to provide hatching eggs for those wanting to give it a go themselves. 😄

We are still working on a few things like offering organic feed from a local company and fresh/dried protein snacks for the feather babies. 😁

What happens when Mother Hen makes commitments, only to find a baby not doing so well? Why baby goes on a road trip! This lil gal was found freezing and lethargic. So into the vest she went and off to run errands and help friends. By the afternoon it was nap time for the babies. By dinner she ate and drank and went into a happy lil food coma…by bed she was mad she had to stay in her box.

At 2:30am I woke and checked on her…thought she was gone 😭 she was soooo cold. She only peeped when I turned her on her side to feel for breathing or a heartbeat. So off to bed she went. Wrapped up on my chest with her feet like ice. By 6am she was squirming and peeping and wanted cuddles under my chin. By 8 she was mad because I put her back in her box to get ready for the day.

Looks like lil lady gets a suite tonight with extra heat.

*this little and her siblings have been in a outside coop/run for weeks, rain or shine just fine with no additional heat*

The barnyard mix is growing so fast! Loving each of them. I don’t know if all these babies will go to new homes once sexed or not yet. I just love all 8 😍 Thinking of start to hatch monthly starting towards the end of summer so folks have layers by spring. What day you? Would you want feather babies now? Or would you be willing to wait?

As time moves forward, we will be adding dual purpose and endangered breeds to the flock come 2022.
