I'm technically not​I really hate having to post this here, but I’m in a tough spot. Due to my injury, health, and upcoming surgery, I still have no income and am unable to work, so I need to get this sold before it starts hitting my credit.

This may not be a big deal to some of you, but Bilahuk Family Farm wildlife rehabilitation and preservation has gained more followers this year than we have in the last five! 🐢🌾
​For our first four years, gaining followers was very slow. We spent the last two years sitting right at 400, not growing at all. Then all of a sudden this year, we’ve gone from 400 to 907 followers! 📈✨
​We are officially only 93 followers away from breaking 1,000!
​I know to most content creators, that’s not a big deal. But having sat almost at nothing for such a long time, the amount we’ve gained this year—and the potential to break 1,000 followers—is a HUGE deal to us.

Some of you might remember our American Buff goose, who sadly lost her mate before coming to live with us. Even though she hangs out with our Cayuga ducks, she still has moments where she sits by herself and calls out for a companion.
​Well, last week someone brought us this handsome gentleman! They kept their distance for the first few days, but over the last two days, they’ve been practically inseparable and are already starting to make sweet noises to each other. It looks like love might be brewing! 💕🪿
​We’re thinking about having a naming contest for both of them, with the winner receiving a farm hoodie! This post isn't the contest yet—I'll make a separate post specifically for entries—but what do you all think about having a naming contest? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Update on the Eagle Rescue at Lake Cammack (10/13):
​We just got word back from the raptor center about the bald eagle we rescued on the 13th at Lake Cammack. It wasn't just a broken wing... he had actually been shot.
​He is currently in critical condition, but he is improving!
​Absolutely disgusting behavior—I don't think I will ever understand how some humans can do something like this to such a majestic creature. Hoping and praying for his continued recovery and strength. 🦅💔

My current view so far today. 🍂
​My health and pain levels over the last couple of weeks have been off the charts, so I am taking a moment to lay in my hammock, take in some fresh air, and take it easy before the phones start blowing up. Doctor appointment Friday, so I'm hoping I can get some relief and anti-nausea medication soon!
​On a cute note, one of our rehabbed squirrels, Pockets, followed me out here and even took a quick nap in the hammock with me! He’s pretty much acting wild at this point, so his interactions are totally on his terms. We don't see him as much anymore—just quick glimpses every now and then—so this was pretty neat. He did discover, however, that he no longer fits in my pocket! 🐿️

We got a call about an injured barred owl this evening in Pittsboro. It's definitely an injured wing, but I don't think it is a break—though I could be wrong. Little guy could fly, but not very well.
​I wasn't feeling too great today, and I had to go chasing this guy through the woods, so excuse me if I look a little thrashed! I love these guys, though; I think they're so adorable. As per instructions by the raptor rehabber, he will be heading to raptor rehab first thing in the morning.
​Fascinating Barred Owl Facts:
​The "Who Cooks for You" Call: Barred owls are famous for their distinct, rhythmic vocalization that sounds like, "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?"
​Unique Eyes: Unlike most birds, an owl's eyes are fixed in their sockets, meaning they have to swivel their entire heads to look around. They can rotate an impressive 270 degrees!
​Silent Flight: Specialized comb-like edges on their primary feathers break up the airflow, allowing them to swoop down on prey completely silently.
​Habitat Lovers: These beautiful birds are native to mature forests and swamps across eastern and northern North America, often hunting small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.

WARNING, CUTENESS OVERLOAD! 🐢
​Today we got a call about four baby box turtles that were accidentally dug up from their nest shortly after hatching. We picked them up and checked them for any potential injuries and other than being extremely dehydrated, they were looking pretty good. They had a nice tepid soak and are now getting perky.
​Normally this late in the year, they would spend the entire winter in the nest where they hatched and not come out until spring. However, since this has been interrupted, I am trying to figure out if I want to artificially brumate them or keep them awake to give them a good head start in life, so they start out in the spring larger than they would have.
​Did you know these fascinating little creatures have some incredible traits?
​Built-in Hinges: Box turtles get their name because their lower shell (plastron) has a unique hinged joint, allowing them to pull themselves completely inside and close their shell like a tight little box for protection.
​Overwintering Survivors: Hatchling box turtles are remarkably resilient; many species can actually tolerate freezing temperatures during their first winter by producing natural cryoprotectants (like a biological antifreeze) in their bodies!
​Lifelong Residents: Box turtles can live an astonishingly long time—often matching or exceeding human lifespans, sometimes living for 50 to over 100 years.

🐢 First Rescue of the Day: Eastern Box Turtle 🐢
​Our first rescue today is this handsome Eastern Box Turtle, who came in with a viral respiratory infection. He is currently soaking in some meds and getting properly hydrated. Fortunately, his infection was caught pretty early, so we are feeling very hopeful about his recovery!
​Did You Know? Cool Box Turtle Facts:
​True "Box" Design: Box turtles get their name from the special hinge on their lower shell (the plastron). Unlike many other turtles, they can pull their head, legs, and tail inside and pull the hinge tight to completely seal themselves shut like a box!
​Homebodies for Life: Box turtles have a small, defined home range that they maintain for their entire lives (often under 2–5 acres). If they are moved out of their home area, they will spend the rest of their lives trying to navigate back to it!
​Mushroom Connoisseurs: They are omnivores and can safely eat toxic wild mushrooms that would make humans or other animals dangerously ill!
​Impressive Lifespan: They grow and mature very slowly, often living 50 to over 100 years in the wild!
