We truly have the absolute best followers! 💚
​Someone in our corner decided to help us step up our game and look a little more official, gifting us brand-new custom business cards, mailing labels, and a personalized address stamp. When you run a non-profit, every single dollar goes straight to animal care—so having custom gear to represent our mission means the world to us.
​Speaking of huge news... we officially crushed a major state milestone! The state set a benchmark of 30 calls in three months to qualify for potential funding. Well, we didn't just meet it—we completely blew past it with 32 calls for the state and 80 general public calls in the last three months, and we still have three days to go! 📈🎉
​Between the friendly waves around town, being recognized and promoted by other local facilities, and proving the desperate need for our services with these numbers, morale around here is high.
​Thank you to everyone who spreads the word, roots for our mission, and helps keep this facility moving forward. We couldn't do this without you! 🐾🌿

🐢 RELEASE DAY SUCCESS! 🐢
​Today is a hugely rewarding day for the rehab team! These two beautiful Eastern painted turtles came to us quite a while back after being kept in captivity since they were hatchlings.
​Transitioning a captive-raised turtle back to the wild takes serious work and patience. Over their time with us, they’ve been undergoing "wild school"—learning how to hunt live prey, forage naturally, navigate wild water habitats, and—most importantly—develop a healthy fear of humans and predators so they can thrive on their own.
​Watching them swim out into their natural habitat today makes every single hour worth it!
​A massive thank you to our incredible community. Releases like this are only possible because of our amazing supporters who stepped up to help cover fuel and transport costs to get these little ones safely to their ideal release site. We truly couldn't do this work without you in our corner! This is a job that grows the heart, not the wallet, and we appreciate your support because our success is community-driven and we only survive because of your kindness. ❤️🙌

Late-night rescue run! 🐍 Late calls always keep things interesting, but tonight’s dispatch from animal control turned up the smallest unexpected guest in someone's living room.
​Meet a newborn Northern Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon)!
​This little cutie is so fresh to the world that its umbilical scar on its belly hasn't even fully healed yet. While adult watersnakes turn a dark, muddy brown, tiny neonates like this one start out with striking, high-contrast gray and dark bands.
​It’s spending the night safely with us and will head back out to a proper wild habitat first thing in the morning!

LOST & FOUND EXOTIC REPTILE / STRAY HOLD NOTICE
​Earlier today, Bilahuk Family Farm was dispatched by Alamance County Animal Control to a housing development in Whitsett, North Carolina, regarding an unusual stray snake. Upon arrival, our team located and secured a Ball Python.
​This animal is currently in critical condition. It is severely emaciated, dangerously dehydrated, and so weak it cannot support its own body weight. It is receiving intensive veterinary care and rehabilitation at our facility.
​WE ARE INTENTIONALLY WITHHOLDING PHOTOS OF THIS SNAKE. Photos are being withheld to prevent fraudulent claims using random online images. If you are missing a Ball Python in the Whitsett area, you must provide clear photographic proof or distinct documentation of your specific animal to verify ownership.
​RECLAMATION PROCESS & POLICY:
​Pursuant to local stray hold guidelines, this animal will be held for a mandatory 10-day period. If you contact us within these 10 days and your proof of ownership matches the animal in our care, ownership verification will be approved. However, the snake will only be cleared for return once ALL of the following requirements are met:
​Verification of Ownership: You must provide clear, matching photographic evidence, detailed distinct markings, or veterinary records for this specific individual.
​Reimbursement of Expenses: You must pay in full all accrued daily boarding fees, specialized feed/supplements, and veterinary or medical expenses incurred during the animal’s rehabilitation while in our care.
​Proof of Secure Housing: You must present photo or video evidence demonstrating that the cause of the escape has been permanently repaired and properly secured with locking mechanisms.
​Facility/Setup Inspection: You must agree to an inspection of the housing setup to confirm that essential husbandry and security standards are met prior to the animal being released back to you.
​If the animal is not reclaimed with all parameters fully satisfied by the end of the 10-day hold, ownership will legally transfer to Bilahuk Family Farm. She will remain in our permanent sanctuary care or be placed with a vetted home once fully restored to health.
​We take exotic pet welfare and secure keeping very seriously for the safety of both the animals and our community.

🚨 WE NEED YOUR HELP ACROSS THE FINISH LINE THIS WEEK! 🚨
​We are officially in the home stretch! So far, we have run 80 rescue calls from the general public and 29 rescue calls dispatched by animal control. We now have only ONE MORE OFFICIAL CALL to make before Friday to officially hit our quota to potentially qualify for state funding.
​Here is where we stand and how you can help us cross the finish line:
​The Good News
​All of our core operational bills are 100% paid!
​Our animals are completely taken care of—feed, feeders, and meds are all fully stocked and ready to go!
​The Challenge
Running non-stop intake and dispatch calls this period without compensation has run our fuel budget completely dry. With our tank currently on empty, if our final official call comes from outside of Graham, we won't have enough gas to make the run before our Friday deadline. We are locked out from refueling until Friday, but we cannot afford to miss this final crucial run!

It’s been a squirrel-a-day situation around here for the last three days! 🐿️💔
​Unfortunately, one little guy didn't make it through the night. Heartbreaking as always, but it makes every success count that much more.
​Out of the other two, one is slowly figuring out feeding time, but the newest intake? Total champ! Latched right onto the ni**le feeder like a natural. 🍼✨
​Holy crap, baby squirrels are ridiculously adorable. Our indoor space is pretty tight at the moment, which means building an outdoor soft-release pen just jumped to the top of the priority list very soon.
​I hate to admit it... but I think I’m officially getting addicted to these little guys!

Meet Ridley! 🐾
​We received a call from Burlington Animal Control regarding an opossum who had a run-in with a dog. While we typically don't name our temporary patients, the reporting family insisted on "Ridley," so Ridley it is!
​Upon evaluation, this handsome guy turned out to be in remarkably good shape. He has a torn nose and a few superficial puncture wounds, but he's wonderfully healthy with an exceptionally thick, soft coat. He did arrive with a small number of fleas, but... they're dead now 😈... We’ve cleaned him up and will keep him under observation for 24 to 48 hours to ensure there are no hidden injuries before getting him back out into the wild.
​A Big Milestone Update:
To qualify as an official state resource and potentially open doors for state funding, we were tasked with logging 30 calls specifically from Animal Control, the Sheriff's Department, or state wildlife officials within 3 months.
​We do this full-time without getting paid a single dime—putting in 70+ hours a week out of sheer passion and commitment to these animals. While we’ve voluntarily answered over 80 total rescue calls in the last three months alone, the state only counts official agency referrals toward this milestone.
​Ridley’s intake brings our official agency count to 29 out of 30—and our deadline is this coming Friday!
​Keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer for us! Just one more official agency call this week could be a game-changer for securing vital funding for the sanctuary.

Meet Woodra! 🦆✨
​She is an absolutely stunning female Eastern Wood Duck who has chosen to frequent our sanctuary. She spends an immense amount of time here—leaving for a little bit every day, and occasionally for a few days at a time, but the longest she’s been gone since she first arrived is a four-day block.
​She loves hanging out with our call ducks and seems to fancy our drake a bit, but I’m hoping if she likes it here enough, she’ll bring back a drake of her own come spring! Just to clarify for compliance: she is completely wild and free to come and go as she pleases; she chooses to be here entirely on her own.
​I try not to feed our call ducks when she’s around, but she’s almost always watching and waiting nearby. Sometimes she even hangs out with our larger ducks, which is hilarious because she looks like a little duckling following them around.
​My only real worry is our upcoming Halloween event—I hope the activity doesn't frighten her off. If she ever decides to move on, I just pray she stays safe, but I truly hope we get to watch her for years to come.

The flash of blue you catch along the woodpile isn't a different animal from the brown lizard you saw last week. It's the same kind — just younger.

A five-lined skink is born with an electric-blue tail and loses it as it grows. The blue is a young skink's safety feature: it pulls a predator's strike toward the tail and away from the head.

🪵 And if something does grab it, the tail simply detaches — and keeps twitching on its own for a minute or two, buying the skink the half-second it needs to be gone. It grows a new one back over the following weeks, usually a duller shade than the original.

Watch them through a season and the color story keeps going. The young wear the blue tail. The adults fade to plain brown and bronze. And in spring, breeding males flush a bright orange-red across the head — the same lizard, wearing three different looks across one life.

All of it runs on the woodpile. Skinks hunt the crickets, spiders, and roaches in the gaps between logs, then disappear into the bark before the midday heat or your shadow can reach them.

Leave a few old logs stacked in a sunny corner, and you've built the whole stage — nursery, hunting ground, and basking rock in one.
