So this is a recap of the 2 day W**e Camp at Cave Ridge Vineyards. There’s just one word to describe this event! WOW! I learned so much! And it was fun also!! There is so much science to making a great w**e. It starts with the perfect soil, the type of vines that will grow the best in that soil, the weather conditions, fertilizer, insect control, harvesting! Oh my goodness! Randy (the owner) has been doing this for 25 years and the wealth of knowledge he has is amazing! Besides learning all things w**e we also had tastings and food! All the w**es are excellent and I bought a ‘few’ bottles! lol. And the food was so delicious that you could go there just for the food! We were the charter members of the first w**e camp and everyone encouraged him to do more! Almost forgot our honey tasting with w**e and cheese! So glad I take lots of photos! Jackie was a local beekeeper. She was so knowledgeable and fun! She even brought some of her bees. We learned about the purpose of the queen bee and how the bees can make a new one if necessary! Who knew?? Her Dad never had to suit up to open the hives but she definitely is not bee whisperer. lol. She infuses herbs and such with her honeys, Rosemary, Roses, Hot and Spicey, Sage, plus she has the regular Clover/Flowers. We saw all the equipment he uses to tend and harvest the vineyard. He has a machine that can pick a row of vines in 3 minutes and when he people picking it to a couple of hours! And there is the w**e press. The grapes are dumped into the top bin which the grapes are then dropped into a tank that has an expanding bladder. It gently presses the grape multiple times. It depends on the type of grape as to how many times it’s pressed. The most fun we had was the w**e blending contest. We split into three groups of 5 and were given 3 bottles of red w**e. We tasted all three then had to mix them in different proportions to make a good tasting w**e! It took our group 3 tries. Then each group had to present their final bottle to the judges, Randy and his daughter Megan, with proportions of each w**e. And a drum roll please.... Table 2 won! That was my Table! Woohoo! So that was the end of camp but everyone stayed and chatted for a while before heading back to their AirBnB’s. What a great experience and new friends made! Our Society members had a lovely picnic at the Cox’s house. The food was fabulous as was the w**e. And the company… well it was fabulous too!! We welcomed 4 new members but unfortunately we didn’t get pictures until after they left. Next time for sure.

We had a wonderful afternoon at Old Hoe Vineyard and W**ery with Pam and Mark Presswood. They were so welcoming and shared so much knowledge about their ‘backyard’ endeavor. A very large thank you to them for adding to our education about viticulture.

Our February monthly meeting making friends one cork at a time. Peter shared tasting notes and education about three unique w**es we had never experienced. He was a fabulous sommelier sharing his incredible expertise. Thank you Peter.
