Today is National cat day. We thought we'd take a moment to highlight the real stars of our pumpkin operation, the cats.
We currently have three barn cats of our own and stray who is almost tame enough to take to be vetted. Our barn cats do important work keeping the local rodent population down. They are all spayed/ neutered and are vaccinated against rabies and FIV. In addition to all the rodents they can eat they also get cat kibble twice a day and a warm, dry barn to live in.
Mama Kitty is the black cat who you'll see most often loving up the pumpkins. She's five years old. As a kitten in the spring of 2020 she had our kids full attention for at least 18 months. She managed to have a litter of kittens before we were able to get her in to be spayed, hence the name.
Chubbers is the grey tiger with the white paws and the sad meow. Chubbers is at least eight years old. He's less friendly with strangers so you may have seen him across the yard vs. up close.
Mittens is the long haired cat who is usually too busy hunting to visit with anyone. She's our oldest cat at thirteen years. We joke that she is like Yoda. To see her walking across the yard you'd think she was way to old to do anything besides nap in the sun. Once she sees a mouse she moves so fast you can't see her go. She brings down mice, voles, chipmunks, small rabbits and once a very unwary squirrel.
Stay kitty is the brown-ish tiger cat in the picture of the pumpkins in the wagon. He's been hanging around almost a year and he has gotten to the point where he'll watch us put the food in the cat dish from only a few feet away.
Please note that while we love our barn cats but we don't need any more. The cost of properly vetting and feeding these guys is enough for us and we don't take in unwanted pet cats.
