Take a look at this setup 💧

This one is a CSI Sidekick iron filter running with a Chandler Systems Oxy-03 ozone generator attached.

So what does the ozone actually do? Iron and sulfur sit in your water dissolved, which is why they slip right past filter media. Ozone is a strong oxidizer, so it gets injected into the air-injection cycle and knocks those dissolved minerals out of solution, turning them into solid particles the filter bed can actually catch and then wash away during backwash. Same idea for the sulfur smell: it gets oxidized and carried out rather than lingering in your glass.

The result is water that doesn't stain the tub orange or smell like eggs, and a filter that does its job instead of just passing iron straight through.

Clean copper, proper valves, a bypass right where you need it, and everything labeled and accessible so future service is quick instead of a scavenger hunt. We build these to be serviced, not just installed. 🔧

Flow Fact Friday 💧

The oldest known copper water pipes on earth are roughly 4,500 years old, found in the mortuary temple of Egyptian pharaoh Sahure at Abusir, built around 2500 BCE.

Here's the wild part: they weren't soldered. Thin sheets of copper were bent around a wooden mandrel and the lap joint was hammered flat by hand.

Then copper basically took a few thousand years off. It didn't become common in homes until the early 20th century, when machining finally made reliable pipe production possible, and it helped push lead piping out of the picture.

Ancient Egyptians, hand-hammered joints, and no leaks. Respect. 🔧

Reverse osmosis didn’t become practical overnight. 💧

The idea was proposed in 1953, but the big breakthrough came in 1960. At UCLA, Sidney Loeb and Srinivasa Sourirajan developed the first practically workable reverse osmosis membrane: an anisotropic cellulose acetate asymmetric membrane.

That invention helped make desalination practical, and eventually brought reverse osmosis into homes for drinking water. Pretty impressive for a membrane! 👏

Chicago literally turned its river around. 💧

In 1900, the city completed the 28-mile Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, redirecting the Chicago River away from Lake Michigan, Chicago’s drinking-water source, and into the Des Plaines and Mississippi River systems.

Built with innovative earth-moving techniques, the massive project helped reduce waterborne diseases like typhoid. Talk about a seriously big plumbing job. 😮

Flow Fact Friday! 💧

Long before smart water systems and fancy filter cartridges, London was already making water treatment history.

In 1829, the Chelsea Waterworks Company built the world’s first treated public water supply. Chief engineer James Simpson designed a slow sand filter using layers of brick, gravel, and sand to clean River Thames water.

They didn’t yet understand the biology behind the process, but the filter removed particles and impurities, helping reduce waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid.

Not bad for a stack of sand, gravel, and brick. 😎

Are all water softeners and treatment systems created equal?🤔

The short answer is no.

It starts with what’s inside the tank. Not all resin is created equal, and much of the resin used in the industry is manufactured overseas. Where it comes from—and how it’s made—matters.

At Calloused Hands, we use North American-made resin and American-made water treatment systems because we believe quality and consistency matter.

But the equipment is only half the equation.

🔧 The company installing it matters, too.

Some companies install whatever equipment their supply house sells without truly knowing how to service it. Others may not be around when that system needs service years down the road.

So while that cheaper price might look good today, it can cost you more in the long run.

A water softener and a water filter are NOT the same thing! 💧

A softener is designed to reduce hardness minerals: mainly calcium and magnesium: that cause scale, spots, and soap that refuses to lather.

A filter targets specific issues like sediment, taste, or odor, depending on the filter media inside.

So if your water is acting like it has a mineral-collection hobby, you may need softening: not just filtering. 😅
