We’ve had a very exciting couple of days in 1st grade! One chick hatched yesterday, four hatched overnight, and 10 hatched today at school!!! The kids loved it (almost as much as I did!!!). 🤩🐣

An update on Little Guy! Several weeks ago, I went out for a 2AM feeding and was shocked to find his tiny leg had fallen off. I was beside myself for several days trying to figure out how that happened and worried about his leg getting infected. Here are some conclusions I came to after talking with a few friends and family members:

—I’m positive I didn’t wrap his broken leg too tightly
—I didn’t check it during the three weeks it was wrapped, which may have prevented me from seeing problems
—Possibly his blood supply to the leg had been cut off when it was broken
—However it was caused, his leg eventually died and fell off without any bleeding! 😮

I’m so happy to report that his leg has healed without any infection!! While healing, I checked it regularly and cleaned it and sprayed it with wound spray whenever necessary. And now it has completely healed and he runs around without any trouble!

In the picture, he’s the smaller one in the front on the left side.

For those wondering about Little Guy, he’s doing well! He is growing and energetic! He’s still much smaller than his fellow lambs and he never puts weight on the leg that was broken. The leg is still much smaller and there are some skin issues on that leg that I’m trying to heal up. But he seems to be thriving and getting around just fine on his three strong legs!

This makes me laugh!! When the cats drink up all their water, Leo goes to stand in the heated water bowl. He’s a resourceful kitty during these bitter cold days!!

Remember those Japanese beetles we all caught last summer? I froze a bag of them to see if my chickens would eat them as a high-protein snack over the winter. From what I could tell today, the chickens liked but did not love them. They were more excited about the freezer-burned cauliflower rice I also tossed out. 🤷🏻‍♀️

An unexpected snow day gave me the time and energy to get some work done in the barn this morning!

Ear Piercing (aka tagging) ✅

Little Guy is making progress! He is hungry to eat every 4-6 hours and gets around his pen without much trouble! I will take his cast off in 9 days and hopefully we will see him put some weight on his leg.
(The baa that you can hear is from him!)
