Wear wool, protect the planet šŸ’š

Did you know... 50% of the weight of clean wool is pure biogenic carbon?

That means it is made of carbon that is constantly cycling through the atmosphere, pasture and plants, sheep and soil.

Why does this matter?

Because understanding the biogenic carbon cycle and accounting for it in carbon costing allows for a much more precise understanding of wool’s environmental impact. Because we need to be grounded in actual farming systems, not averages and assumptions that don't reflect regional realities.

To better understand biogenic carbon flows, researchers built detailed farm-level models based on real production calendars and peer-reviewed livestock data. These models were refined to match published production figures while adding greater accuracy on biological processes across the grazing cycle.

It’s another step toward better data, better understanding, and better decisions for the future of natural fibres. 🌱

Happy ewes, growing lambs, green grass, and blue sky šŸ’š

We’re having so much fun integrating our flock into our landscape—and are so grateful for the tools and technology that make it possible! With our portable fencing we can graze adaptively *anywhere,* helping us make the most of our land without changing its character.

Fresh lambs AND fresh farmstand products? Yes, please!

Today began with two beautiful new ewe lambs. Carex was the last of our foundation flock to lamb, and she did amazing. Doubly amazing, since she chose the day that the flock is grazing the front yard to have her lambs—which means you can say hello to the babies when you stop at the farmstand this weekend!

We’ve been working on a spring restock, and have a new lotion scent, wool dryer balls, and fresh eggs ready to purchase!

Grazing grass, just as they were meant to be šŸ’š

We added these ladies to the farm to serve several very important roles. Being ruminants, they have an almost magical ability to take stuff we can’t eat and turn it into to useful products—all while supercharging healthy soil biology.

Shetlands are a hardy heritage breed of sheep with excellent quality wool and great tasting, mild flavored meat. They are well suited to a low-input system and are less vulnerable to key health issues that can target pasture raised sheep (mainly parasites and hoof rot).

This week marks a major milestone: our first pasture turnout!

Grass is growing, and the girls (and their lambs) are ready to get to work processing it into meat, fiber, and fertilizer. We are using mobile electric fencing powered by a small mobile solar unit to graze the odd-shaped, marginal acres AND orchard understories across the farm.

This will allows us to do two key things:
1) stack additional production onto our orchard ground, making each acre more profitable
2) Passively fertilize and rehabilitate the soils on this ground in truly sustainable, regenerative ways, that don’t rely on continual fossil fuel inputs or harm waterways or wildlife.

How are our other upper Midwest/Michigan folks doing?

We’re soggy and had our portable livestock shelter get moved almost 90*, but everyone looks fine and no significant damage to report. Thankfully, the tornadic cells in our region passed north & south of us, and we don’t have any major flooding concern to worry about—just ponding and a damp basement.

Hope you all are safe and secure after a crazy weather night!
