Hornworms are the enemy. They devour tomato plants in about a day. Hornworms look scary, are huge, and squishy. However, this particular hornworm is beneficial to food gardens. The white eggs on the outside signal that nature collided, and a wasp got inside of the hornworm and laid eggs. The eggs will hatch and the wasps will eat the hornworm from the inside out. Once their food source is gone, wasps will stay in your garden and eat other hornworms.

Black Farmer Bae decided she didn’t need to see that process. It’s near the end of the season and now I’m letting the chips fall where they may in the garden. If it were earlier in the season, I would have let nature take its course.

Honey Peppers are a multicolored sweet pepper and a beloved heirloom of the Philadelphia Black community of the early 1900s. They are ornamental sweet peppers that feature purple flowers and fruit that transforms from dark purple, to mustard yellow, and finally to an orange as it ripens.

We can thank Black Folk Artist, Horace Pippin for this extraordinary pepper, as he shared his seeds with William Woys Weaver’s grandfather in the early 1940’s. All seeds in existence today can be traced to Horace Pippin.

History remembers Pippin as the first Black painter to be known for expressing his concern about war and social injustices in the themes of his art.

His right arm was badly injured in battle during his service in WWI, and as the story goes, Pippin sought out bee sting therapy to alleviate his suffering. William Woys Weaver’s grandfather exchanged bees with Pippin for the seeds of this pepper and other heirloom peppers that Pippin had collected.

These heirlooms are considered a heritage variety of the Black community of the mid-Atlantic during Pippin’s time. Honey Peppers rare and a unique variety and Black Farmer Bae grew this pretty Honey Pepper.
