As we get ready to protect the fruit buds and blossoms against the freeze tonight, this bit of prose encompasses almost everything that Spring is about here in the orchards. Thanks to our sister Debbie for the well written piece. π
**The trees stand poised, expectant, obedient, vulnerable. Their dormancy of rest behind them. Their momentous task before them. To give forth the fruit they are designed to offer, frost and wind and hail must be withstood, bees must be coaxed into pollination, insect and fungal enemies vanquished. Then, needed rain; not too much, not too little, and sun; not too hot, nor relentless; and benevolent interference by their horticulturalists. The buds will swell and burst. The blossoms will beckon and entice. Their fragrance will waft and intoxicate. No urging needed. The process is in motion. It cannot be reversed nor stopped by adversity, only slowed or speeded by cold or heat. Its mission is critical. Its success is to be heavy laden. We benefit by both the process and the outcome. We gain sustenance of honey and fruit. We are lifted spiritually by the beauty, the ancient springtime renewal, the hope, the expectation, the faith. Oh the magnificence of it all! But for now, they stand poised⦠on the edge of creation.
