Hello again friends! We haven't posted on our page in a hot minute because, you know, life! So here's a little bit of an update on what's been going on around the farmstead. The chickens and ducks went on strike during molting season and I think the whole property collectively got about 7 eggs in the span of a few months.. but they're all about done with the molt and we're starting to get a lot more duck and chicken eggs! The cayuga ducks have started laying these cool, black/dark gray eggs! Our property dog, Sadie, had a litter of puppies back in August and Pax and Mona (as well as Sadie) have become permanent members of the family! Other than the chaos of adding two huge puppies who's goal in life is to chase and chew on everything they can get ahold of, all is normal on the farmsteadπŸ€ͺ Sourdough bread baking, duck and chicken chasing, dog wrangling, kid teaching, regular days πŸ˜† life is good!

I have officially learned why it's important to mark eggs when a chicken or duck has gone broody! When Becky hatched out Rosie, I took the rest of her eggs and put them in the incubator. She had taken some other eggs that weren't her original ones and was sitting on all of them. Because of this, I wasn't sure how far along any of them were. So now, I have Jackie that hatched out last week.. and yesterday I had Sadie hatch out πŸ˜… and there are STILL 2 more eggs in the incubator that may or may not hatch.. what a ride 🀣 mark your eggs people, it's important so you don't have staggered hatching ducks that become super needy πŸ˜†

One of Becky's other eggs hatched that I put in the incubator after Rosie hatched! I hadn't thought any of the eggs were developing and then p**f, there's this little one sitting in the incubator this morning after about an hour of trying to hatch (that's super fast for a duckling!) This little one is a couple weeks behind all the others so it's going to spend it's nights in a brooder with a couple stolen older ducklings (not so thrilled baby sitters) until it's big enough to run with the big kids all day!

Becky's baby! She (hopefully) needs a name! Suggestions? I had to take the rest of Becky's eggs so she'll get off the nest and start to teach the baby how to be a duck πŸ˜†

Broody Becky update- she successfully hatched a duckling! She has technically hatched out 2, but unfortunately one died. But this little one hatched sometime last night and seems to be doing just fine! So excited she gets to be a mom πŸ€—

Broody Becky update- she got to step away from the nest for a bath and get a much needed walk and break from laying on the eggs; it's a lot of work you know! She's still on 5 eggs but only 2 are developing.. oh well, she's trying! If my calculations are correct, we're about 8 days from hatch day 🀞

Broody Becky update: she now has another mom friend being broody right next to her! So apparently we have a maternity ward now πŸ˜† Dixie is not as easy going as Becky, so her broody venture could be interesting, if it lasts πŸ˜„ also, if you turn the volume up on the video, you'll hear Becky's little peeps when she gets off the nest to get a drink! Also, Fry the goose says hello!

Update on Broody Becky's broody venture: I candled her eggs yesterday and 2 of the 6 seem to be developing really well. The others could possibly still develop because muscovy eggs take longer than regular duck eggs to incubate πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ either way, hopefully she can hatch out a couple babies 🀞 as you can see, she's quite comfy in her little nest, directly next to the feeder for easy access πŸ˜„

Update on Broody Becky's broody venture: she is now laying on 6 eggs instead of 4 (not sure if she laid them or stole them from another duck) and she's annoyed by the chickens who come into to the duck coop and invade her space πŸ˜… I will candle her eggs in a couple days to see if any are developing 🀞also, I have 10 duck eggs going in an incubator, that I started a day or so before Becky started so now we are in competition to see who can hatch out more ducklings πŸ˜„

This is Becky, formerly called Pecky Becky because of her sassy attitude and tendency to peck at the other ducks if they got too close. Nowadays (as of 2 days ago) she's going by Broody Becky, because she's laying on 4 eggs and trying her hardest to get them to hatch! Will post updates about her broody venture as it goes along 😁
And of course a photo of Fry the goose, because he's needy and wants attention
