We’ve got a hen that’s been trying to hatch a clutch for a couple months now. The problem is, about half of every hatch ends up being roosters, and we’re not looking to raise a bunch of roos. Because of that, we buy day old sexed chicks each year.

Most of the time we brood them ourselves for a few weeks, but every once in a while we let a broody hen take over. It’s about as simple as it sounds. Slide a few chicks under her and let her think she hatched them.

We toss a towel over her head for a minute to keep her calm then slip the chicks underneath. Most people will say to only do this at night in case she reacts poorly.

We always just stayed nearby for a few minutes to watch her, and we’ve never had an issue.

If she accepts them, she does the rest. Keeps them warm, teaches them how to be chickens, and raises them more efficiently than any brooder can.

Mom and babies will call this old rabbit grow out tractor home for the next few weeks.

The boys had a great showing and the twin tornadoes have made their presence known in the barn. Come out to the Will County fair, enjoy this beautiful weather, and don’t forget to stop by the dairy barn and say hi.
