The Wrenn's Happy Hens

The Wrenn's Happy Hens Our past chickens were hand raised from one day old chicks as part of local 4-H chicken program for school children. Her pen won 4th place of 36 pens.

The original chickens were raised by our daughter Annessa for the first 6 months, until the 2010 Marshall County 4-H Chick Show. We continued to support the local 4-H chicken programs by buying chickens at the 4-H shows. The funds earned by these children are a great reward for the hard work of daily care of their chickens. In 2017, Alex raised chickens through 4-H as well. However, luck was not o

n our side and we lost many of our hens to predators. Feeling defeated, we gave up for a long while. Now Amelia be I are ready to try again! We know what it takes to keep the predators away and hope to maintain a safe place to raise our chickens. We hope to have several breeds that will ultimately lay different shades of eggs, also known as rainbow eggs.

Just wanted to update on The Wrenn's Happy Hens new additions. We are currently sitting at 27 hens and 1 rooster. We have added two cats to the coop for mice control. Maggie and Marge are doing a great job with that. Since our older goat, Bud died in November, Tom has been lonely and hanging out with the chickens much more. I even found him “roosting” on top of the hens laying boxes. For my birthday this year, I requested a female goat so he would have a friend (and maybe a family down the road). We think we found the perfect match for him, another dwarfed Pygmy around the same age. We brought Priscilla home on Saturday.

The chickens have a stream that flows right behind their coop. They love to get out and explore their “backyard”!

This hen who has taken up nearly permanent residence in nesting box #1, seems to be a pretty special hen. She is a Green Queen, which is a hybrid breed, similar to the Easter Eggers. We call her Gibbs because her beard/muff reminds of the first mate on Pirates of the Caribbean. 😉 She also has feathered legs and 5 toes! She lays a pretty aqua-blue tinted “green” egg. Her breed is typically not noted as being broody, but I think she must be an exception. She is always in her box and pretty much always has an egg tucked up under her feathers and fluff! At first she would fluff her feathers and “growl” at me if I got too close. She would peck at me if I tried to touch her. But lately, she has calmed down and lets me pick her up and give her some special attention before I put her down and take her egg. 💚💙 She’s one of my favorites. Shhhh. Don’t tell the others.

Well, we are getting so many eggs now! We plan to sell them but probably not until the Spring. We need to wait until they are more consistent in laying normal size eggs. However, it’s the season to share!! We would like to give away a dozen eggs here and there through Christmas. Please comment if you would love to receive some of our colorful eggs! We will draw for winners as we have extras to share. (Eggs to be given away will be from the freshest gather. We will wash and refrigerate them to last you longer, unless otherwise requested.).

So excited to have one of the girls laying eggs! Hopefully the others will soon too!
