A big warm up is expected over the next few days with summer like temperatures over the weekend. If you plan to seek relief by recreating in area lakes, creeks, or rivers, remember that the water is COLD. Our lakes and streams are fed by snowmelt, and the water remains significantly colder than the surrounding air. Be sure to wear a life jacket because water at these temperatures can cause paralysis and lead to drowning.

Growing ginger at home for a steady supply is so rewarding! đź’š Here are some tips for an endless ginger harvest (and getting those gorgeous flowers):

1. Start with plump, healthy rhizomes that have visible eyes/growth buds.

2. Soak the rhizomes overnight before cutting into sections with 1-2 eyes each.

3. Plant sections in a wide, shallow container with well-draining soil mixed with compost or manure.

4. Water deeply after planting, keeping soil consistently moist but not soggy.

5. Ginger thrives in warm (75-85°F), humid conditions. Use a pebble tray or mist leaves to increase humidity.

6. Feed every 2-4 weeks during growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

7. Provide ample sunlight and avoid disturbing the plants to encourage flowering.

8. After 8-10 months, you can start harvesting fresh rhizomes as needed by digging around the base.

The key is replicating ginger's preferred tropical environment indoors. With patience, you'll have a constant supply of this zesty rhizome right at home! The flowers are an added tropical treat when you get conditions just right.

I love having homegrown ginger on hand for cooking, teas, and more. So satisfying to grow your own endless supply!

Last weekend was Medford’s Pear Blossom Festival, but what does that have to do with Jacksonville’s 1932 Beekman House Living History tours this weekend? Cornelius Beekman took great pride in his pear trees. Two of his pears created quite the newspaper sensation on one of his visits to his family in Dundee, NY. Weighing in at 2 pounds each, they were described as “resembling local Bartlett pears but as large as summer squashes!”
You can learn more about 1800s Beekman family life this Saturday, April 20, along with what life was like in Depression Era Jacksonville when you join the adult Beekman children, family members, and friends as they close up the 1870s family home, go through closets and cupboards, comment on current events, and reminisce about growing up in the late 19th Century.
Pay a 1-hour “social call” at 10:30am, 12n, or 2pm and time travel to 1932 Jacksonville for these unique interactive “Living History” tours where you become part of the play. The Beekman House, owned and occupied by the richest and most prominent Jacksonville pioneer family, is located at 470 E. California Street, Jacksonville. Tour admission is $10. Reservations are suggested, so don’t miss out! Plan your visit at https://historicjacksonville.org/1932-living-history/.
