We don’t just grow flowers for quaint special occasions; we grow them for the bedside table, the kitchen window, and every unwritten moment in between. We moved to Granville at the end of 2023 and decided amidst several projects to start a cut flower farm! I've always loved having fresh cut flowers in our home, I feel it brings a sense of comfort and growing our own flowers has always been a dream

of mine. I find it amazing that every flower is unique in it's own way and am always on the hunt for uncommon varieties. We are thrilled to be able to share an abundance of pesticide-free flowers with our community. For our first growing year, 2024, we will likely remain a porch-pickup setup until we know what to expect in terms of flower growth. We will post to this page when we have bouquets available for pickup, so keep an eye out for notifications!

Post-vaca flower walk with Pen 🌸
The flowers are happy, Pen is doing great and we’re happy to be back to cooler temps 😎

It was a little extra scary leaving the pups to go on vacation this time around with Pen’s cancer diagnosis, but we knew she was in good hands with the in-laws and her doctor gave the green light, so we went on a much needed hiatus. We had a great time and were ready to get home to snuggle some pups and to check on things after the monsoons came through.

All is well, the monarchs are LOVING the zinnias, the dahlias are starting to shoot blooms up and my father in law took on some much needed weeding while we were gone 🙏🏼

I had every intention of getting up early and cutting flowers, but alas…exhaustion won.
I did however successfully procrastinate the making of 154,472 loaves of zucchini bread and played with some vases and antique flower frogs I’ve collected over the years instead.

These flowers were picked Saturday morning and while some have faded out, others are still going strong! Tending to one’s self is at times difficult to prioritize for most, so having a moment to play around (even with a few day old blooms) is rejuvenating.

And thus a thought popped into my mind…so stay tuned to see if I can come up with the logistics to make it work 🌸

Side note: why the French music? Our toddler is probably asking the same question today since we’ve been listening to French children’s music all morning. I’m not really sure why, maybe because we need a vacation 😅

Petals for Pen:
Many of you have likely seen Pen out in the field with me at some point. She loves to venture down to the flowers to check for critters and to watch the hustle and bustle of cars and cyclists passing by.
She is a sucker for some pets and always brings a smile to everyone’s face that she greets. It doesn’t seem fair that she’d receive a diagnosis of Lymphoma, but nothing regarding cancer is ever fair and well, here we are. Time is at a standstill and it’s also fleeting at hyper speed all at once.

Pen’s chemo journey has just begun as of last Friday and she’s doing so well it’s hard to believe she actually has anything going on. We are grateful to have this time to spend with our Pen and to be present in every moment we are given with her.

Thus, is born. Our portion of all purchases including our flowers or our Valerie Shaw decor items will go directly toward Penelope’s care and adventures while she feels up to it ♥️

A new batch of whimsical bouquets will be arriving at Relic & Reverie tomorrow! They’re the blooms Pen helped me pick this morning before she left me in the dust and chose breakfast above all else.

Soil blocking all day everyday.

Saturday: Tilling complete! With breaking so much new ground, tilling seemed to be the way to go. Hoping to avoid it next season so we don’t disturb the soil so much 🤞🏼

Our soil tests came back as having high magnesium and calcium, which is fine unless your magnesium is higher than the calcium (my understanding)…which ours is. The high magnesium leads to compact soil (think sticky when wet) which keeps crops from taking up nutrients as they should and it also leads to poor water drainage. To balance our levels out we’ve added crushed lime and compost into the soil. We had to go with a manure-free compost because manure will add magnesium to the soil…which makes sense as to why our soil read so high in that category…it used to be a 🐮 pasture!

With our amendments incorporated into the soil we shouldn’t have to soil test again for a bit. Hopefully our flowers like it, because…well they just better!

Thankful to our friends at Paisley’s rental in Newark for supplying us with a workhorse tiller so I could even sneak in a surprise flower bed without anyone noticing. Less grass= less mowing…so really I’m just helping.

There are some tool sounds that now make my husband very alert when he hears me starting them up…drill (I’ve been known to randomly hang things..without measuring), hammer (because of the time I was going to the kitchen to refill our coffees and ended up opening up part of a wall looking for a brick chimney…I mean, I found it 🤷🏼‍♀️) and now…tiller.
