It’s not often that we Californians can give a shout out to a big utility company but that’s what we get to do today. Before the rain started, the pond was FULL. In September. Anyone who knows California’s dry season knows what year round water means. Livestock. Grass. Green belt Fire breaks. Fire fighting capability.

The utility company decided to remove 13 willow trees growing under the transmission lines, with our complete support and blessing. We knew there was a spring back in there somewhere, knew it once supported a cabin in the late 1800s, but really had no idea the volume of water it might have. The pond, conservatively estimated at 90 thousand gallons, started filling with a trickle the day they started cutting trees. By the time they finished 3 days later, the trickle was half a 4 inch pipe, hastily put in to maintain ability to keep equipment moving. 5 days later, without any rain, the pond was full and the overflow was running into the main pasture. Wow. Just wow.

As the temperature rises, we’d like to remind our youth buyers that the most important nutrient this time of year is H2O. Your animals need cool, clean water to keep growing and looking their best. We recommend making ice in any big jug or container you can get it back out of (we like big yogurt containers). Drop one into the water tank or bowl to keep it cooler longer.

Now, does anyone know why the hen ducks are multiplying in our pond? No drakes, just hens.

We’d like to introduce the latest addition to the flock- Rogue! He’s an early December ram lamb, and should be ready to do his job this fall. We’re excited to see what his lambs look like!

Tag, you’re it! The barn is open and we are accepting deposits on lambs. No auction, youth friendly prices. Lambs with ear tags are reserved, those without tags are available. Only 5 left!
