Some highlights from yesterday’s linear appraisal….

Southern Grace Song of the Sea “Miriam” at four years old received a total score of VVEV 88.

Her daughter’s “Hannah” Drunken Oak Song of Hannah at three years old scored VVVV87 and “Honey” Drunken Oak Milk N Honey at two years old first freshening scored GGVG 83.

Castle Rock Crystalline Ice “Crystal” at four years old came in at GVVV 85.

“Layla” Drunken Oak Creme Brûlée at three years old scored VVVV 86. Both Layla and Hannah are sired by Castle Rock Mountain Hare. And his youngest daughter to be appraised, one year old Drunken Oak Leia Organa who we affectionately refer to as Princess scored GGGG 81.

We appraised a few bucks. Southern Grace Ghost Pepper comes in over the height restriction at 24 inches but he scored GEE 87! And Southern Grace HL Elijah (littermate brother to Miriam) scored GVE 85. He also measures 24 inches. Thankfully these tall boys aren’t giving us huge daughters. We love seeing what they have been producing.

There were other girls that keep on shining. Quaking Canopy Petit Syrah at 5 years old scored GVEV 87 and Quaking Canopy Moaning Myrtle (same age) scored GEVA 83. Both of these girls freshened in December and they just keep putting the milk in the pail. So I’m considering putting them on an extended lactation this year.

A couple of our one and two year olds have some maturing to do. I’m not sure if we will keep them all to watch how they do or find a great home for them to shine in. Definitely have some decisions to make. But I love how appraisal gives me the information to make the best decisions to move our herd forward.

For Reference the first letter refers to General Appearance, then Dairy strength, then Body Capacity and finally Mammary. An E is excellent, V is very good, G is good plus and A is acceptable (there is also F for fair and P for poor).

We came, we saw, we conquered! Thank you Nevada County Fair for the memories, the lessons and the fun. First year for the older boys with market projects. And our first year submitting still exhibits. Being able to enjoy being a part of more of the traditions made this years fair especially meaningful. I know we are already making plans for next year!!

So proud of this kid stepping onto the big stage and rocking it! This is Ruby Volcano Golden Ice (Castle Rock Crystalline Ice x Quaking Canopy Highlyillogical *B). She is a dry yearling. I think he has done a fantastic job breeding and raising this gorgeous doe.

Proud of this kid up and at it walking that market lamb and halter breaking him. He came to us unsocialized and difficult to catch. Now he’s at the gate waiting for his walk every morning. Great job guys! Four weeks till fair.
