The vines at Naggiar Vineyards and Winery are really loving this weather...and so is the pooch. Tempranillo, Malbec, Sangiovese and the Garnacha Blanca have finally hit their stride. All bits and pieces for us here at The Bull and Bruin.

Big circuit today, from Napa, to Geyserville, to Kenwood and back to Atlas Peak.....and it is gorgeous everywhere. 3 out of 4 vineyards organically farmed, clean air and vineyards popping with life. So beautiful.....and with all the mowing and disking and life popping...so are the f'ing allergens.

My son Rhys's first attempt at smoking turkey breast over oak on the and bird numero dos in the freezer. Really prehistoric looking animals. This smoked turkey should pair very nicely with a La La Chertosa Zinfandel or Belledor Vineyards
Old Vine Zinfandel. The bright red fruit, black pepper and elegant tannins should balance well with the smoked wild turkey.

Watch your feet folks! We're not the only ones craving to get out in this beautiful weather. As this weather continues to get nicer for us, the nicer it is for some of our cold-blooded neighbors as well. Not to mention the real bu**er coming on strong, TICKS!
And a PSA - if you don't know what kind of snake it is, please don't pick it up....or do and possibly meet Mr. Darwin.

I know bread making has become a hot item right now but if you can make brread, you can easily make fresh pasta. And it's frickin' delicious. Teaching son #2 to make....and eat homemade pasta.....the ladies love a gent who can cook....or at least they did in the past. 😉 This ones tossed with some homemade Italian sausage and butter. The hand crank pasta machine is not necessary, but then neither are shoes for running a marathon, but it makes it a lot easier. Try this with a lighter/brighter Sangiovese like the Borjón Winery Sangiovese, or if you go with a meaty red sauce, perhaps a bottle of the Naggiar Vineyards and Winery Sangiovese. When this all said and done, I hope you all keep up with these new methods of home cooking you've picked up.

Whether it be farming, foraging, fishing or harvesting an animal from the wild, there is something deeply rewarding about supplying your family with food. Particularly in this day and age. More clean, definitely organic, meat for the freezer.

Love this place. Naggiar Vineyards and Winery has a very special place in my heart. It's where I've worked as viticulturist and winemaker for nearly 15 years and adjacent to our home vineyard, where a large portion of the makings for "The Bull" and "The Bruin" are grown. Normally this tasting room is buzzing with people enjoying themselves on the outside patio....but not right now. Silver lining.....really frickin' peaceful and no dust! All will be back to "normal" soon enough.

Garnacha Tinta (Grenache Noire) is really diggin' this warm weather. It and Chardonnay seem to be at the fore.

Work load starting to increase at the at St. John's. I have a feeling there will definitely be a greater need in the near future. Bees are getting really active, apple trees are mid-bloom, harvesting, soil prep, irrigation sets and lots and lots of weeding. If you want to burn off some energy will social distancing, try weeding. Very therapeutic. 😁

Stock time. Seriously folks if you've never made your own bone broth or game stock you are soooooo missing out. AND paying wayyyyy too much. If your local grocer or butcher doesn't have chicken feet or backs.....switch. This is a combination of chicken feet, wild boar ribs, elk bones, beef bones, chicken backs and the carcass of a roasted chicken. The feet make the broth. Roast them first and then simmer away with some quality onions, carrots celery, bay, etc. This is the basr for all types of rice dishes, bean dishes, soups and stews. Get creative...think lemon grass, tamarind, peppers, etc. The world is your broth and SOOOO much better than store bought. ;)

Mas pan. I keep up this pace and I'll be 270 before you know it. Empanadas de Carne are next up, possibly with a few bottles of vino tinto.....that won't add any more pounds.
