New Wine Class, Wines Of The World
With A Special Focus On The Wines Of Italy and Spain
Nevada County Campus,
Wednesday, March 14th. 6-9 pm. $39.
Ever heard of the ABC syndrome? Anything but Cabernet or Chardonnay! It’s too easy to get stuck in a wine rut where we drink the same wines over and over again. You want to try something else but what?
In this class we will focus primarily on the regional wines of Italy, with a secondary spotlight on Spain.
Discover whites like Verdicchio di Castelli di Jesi, Falanghina, or Gavi di Gavi and reds like Gaglioppo, Montepulciano or Frappato, not to mention a few variations of Sangiovese.
And there’s Spain, with grapes like Mencia, Monastrell or Albarino.
Step outside your zone, expand your horizons and discover what you would be drinking if you lived in Barcelona, Bolzano or Brindisi.
Class size limited to 20. Must be 21. $30 materials fee due at class.
Go to www.pinehillwineworks.com for details about how to enroll.

Learn To Taste White Wine Like An Expert
Sierra College Kaleidoscope Class, Wednesday, February 29

This is the second in this series of wine classes at Sierra College this winter. The red wine class was fully loaded and we tasted 25 different wines. This white wine class is no less fully packed.

This time we will start with a component tasting, getting a clearer understanding of both acidity and sugar and there complex relationship to each other.

Then we'll continue on with a detailed look at some Rieslings, again following the trail of fruitiness, sweetness (or lack there of) and acidity.

We'll follow that with a look at some aromatic whites asking if all fruity smelling wines are sweet or does that even have anything to do with it?

Then we'll take a look at some Sauvignon Blancs demonstrating how the same grape from different locations can taste different, or do they?

Finally, we'll take a detailed look at some Chardonnays exploring the difference between vineyard originated and winery originated flavors and tastes.

It should prove to be a full and exciting adventure into white wine.
Please check www.pinhillwineworks.com for more details and how to enroll through Sierra College.

Sierra College Kaleidoscope Wine Classes
I'm starting a new series of three, three hour wine classes at Sierra College on February 15.
The first one, "Learn To Taste Red Wines Like An Expert" is a wine workshop designed to improve your wine tasting skills. Through a series of wine examples learn to recognize the difference between taste and aroma, structure and flavor and acid and tannin.
Then take some of those new skills for a test drive as we look at the differences between some old world and new world styles and finish with a detailed look at Cabernet.
Go to www.pinehillwineworks.com for more details and a link to Sierra College where you enroll.

New Wine Class: Thursday, October 20th.
Taste White Wines Like An Expert.
My new Wine School program launched earlier this month with a red wine class at the Holiday Inn in Auburn on October 6th. To be sure, you would have to ask someone who attended, but if you ask me, I thought it went well.
The Holiday Inn turns out, as expected, to be a great place to do this. It is centrally located, they have a terrific room for the class, a restaurant, and a friendly staff.
The next class, Learn To Taste White Wines Like An Expert is this Thursday starting a 6:00 pm. This is a practical, hands-on, guided workshop of tasting and understanding white wines with a unique view into the relationship of acidity and sugar, aroma and sweetness and the uses and effect of oak.
To register for the class, contact Tami Caufield at The Holiday Inn in Auburn at 530-887-8787.
