🍅 Farm Update 🍅
This week has been a reminder that growing produce to organic standards is one of the most challenging things we’ve ever done.
The good news is that our tomato greenhouse is looking absolutely incredible. The plants are loaded with fruit, and color is starting to show up across the greenhouse. We’ve already harvested a few Cherokee Purple and Thornburn’s Terra Cotta tomatoes, and they were every bit as good as we hoped. If the rest of the crop follows suit, we’re in for a fantastic tomato season.
On the other hand, our cucumber greenhouse has thrown us a few challenges this year. Earlier this spring, rabbits found their way in and treated over 300 cucumber plants and hundreds of pepper plants like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Then this week we found ourselves battling an aphid outbreak.
The good news? The cucumbers are recovering, the aphids received an eviction notice, and things are moving in the right direction. That’s farming. Just when you think you’ve solved one problem, another one pops up. But every challenge teaches us something and makes us better growers.
Unfortunately, we simply don’t have enough produce ready this week to justify making the trip to market. Rather than show up with a half-empty table, we’re going to spend the weekend tending crops and preparing for the harvests that are just around the corner.
We’ll be opting out of tomorrow’s market, but if all goes as planned, we expect to have tables full of beautiful heirloom tomatoes by next weekend.
Thank you for following along and supporting our little farm. We can’t wait to start filling baskets with Cherokee Purple, Thornburn’s Terra Cotta, and many other incredible heirloom varieties.
