baby chick update ::
i would’ve rather birthed 21 human babies with how stressful the first 24 hours were. when we FINALLY got the chicks under their moms (durning rain, thunder, and lighting) i thought all was well.
WRONG! the next day i come out to let them out and see about 15 baby chicks running around. after going out every hour or so and putting them back under the moms, right before bed i finally decided to make a ramp to the nesting boxes. i can’t believe it took me all day to think of that. i taught the babies how to go up it and finally they could go to their moms if needed. i spent all day yesterday running around the yard chasing chicks. at one point i did a full on superman dive into the sh*tty wood chips just to catch one. joke was on me though cause when i came back out 10 minutes later that same baby was running around another part of the yard.
anyways, today i opened the coop and had to go work with my uncle. i hoped for the best buttt expected the worst. when i came back home i was scared of what i’d see but THIS is what i saw. two mommies working together. 💕
i went to check on the third to find she made her way into the maternity ward i set up but the other hens had stolen all but ONE baby from her. she’s still being the best mommy to that one though, and i have a few in the house getting healthier so i plan to give her a couple of those tonight if she’ll take them.
weve only ever had one mother hen, mama midnight, and we gave her her chicks and had no more problems. they stayed with her and she stayed with them. they never needed a ramp either they’d all just hop in and out of the nesting boxes. this time was definitely a learning curve and stressful.
but anyways, all the hard worked paid off because the babies are good to go with their moms. the moms will raise them, teach them to scratch the earth, show them where the food/water is, and much more. i’m so excited to watch them run around everyday 🥺
