Today we celebrate Indigenous People’s Day.
It has been hard for some to adjust and many want to continue to use Columbus Day.
It is important to remember the history of how our “New World” was discovered and remember those who discovered it. It is also increasingly important to honor those that were here when Europeans arrived. Many great nations, many great civilizations, were already here and flourishing. And the few that are left are only a faint shadow of their former glory.
With each passing day, these peoples are pushed farther towards extinction, and most are already lost forever. And the thousands of years of history and culture and perspective are lost to us forever.
One day per year, one.
On this, Indigenous People’s Day, we acknowledge all that is lost in hopes to preserve all we still have. We choose to forgo honoring our colonizing ancestors while still remembering them. But we choose instead to show love and respect and honor to those great nations that no longer stand as a direct impact of our existence.
