From a summer job to a career in cattle feeding.
Avery Brewer’s story with ILS started long before he became a full-time employee. At just 14 years old, Avery began spending summers and winters working at Great Bend Feeding, taking on different jobs and learning how the feedyard operated.
As his interest in the industry grew, so did his experience. Avery completed internships with Great Bend Feeding and McClymont Feedyard, gaining exposure to different parts of the operation while building relationships with people across ILS.
What stood out most wasn’t just what he learned—it was how he was treated.
“I wasn’t treated like an intern, but like someone who had been with the feedyard for years.”
Today, Avery has built his career right where it started as Cattle Accountant at Great Bend Feeding. He manages incoming and outgoing cattle, communicates with customers about their cattle and market conditions, assists with financials and supports Progressive Beef audits.
His advice for students considering an ILS internship is simple:
“Show up every day willing to learn, take pride in what you do, and success will follow.”
