Why doesn’t he look anything like his mother you may ask. Well, that’s because our black Angus cow and our Hereford bull both carry the red recessive gene.
While black coat color is usually more dominant in cattle, many black angus carry a hidden red recessive gene. If both parents carry a copy of the red gene, it can be passed down to their calf resulting in the Hereford traits.
