Central Colorado Water is led by a board that reflects the communities it serves across Adams, Weld and Morgan counties, bringing together a wide range of experience to guide decisions that matter locally.

Those decisions support more than 550 farm families who rely on this water for locally grown food and the broader agricultural economy.

The district’s work focuses on protecting water quality and providing augmentation so wells can continue operating, even in challenging conditions and drought.

For decades, that work has helped keep water in the region and supported agriculture across the South Platte River basin. 💧

When cities buy water rights from rural areas, the land doesn’t just sit idle. It dries out, erodes and can turn into weed-filled ground that hurts nearby farms and communities.

According to Water Education Colorado, “Irrigated farm lands have dropped 32% since 1997, a trend caused by city water purchases, changes in agricultural markets, drought, and fallowing of farm fields to allow more water to flow to downstream states."

This is exactly why Central Colorado Water focuses on keeping water in the South Platte River basin and investing in storage. Protecting water access helps keep farms productive and prevents the kind of land loss described here.

Work is nearly complete on the newest ponds for water diverted by the Walker Recharge pumps.

Central Colorado Water is very excited to complete this project that will supply much needed water to farms and ranches this summer and in future years.

The state has activated its Drought Task Force. This marks just the third time it has been activated since Colorado’s Drought Mitigation and Response Plan was created in 1981.

Snowpack levels remain low, temperatures are rising and about 80% of Colorado is now experiencing some level of drought, with little chance of a full recovery this season.

This impacts farms, communities and the long-term water supply across the state.

That’s why planning, storage and conservation matter, especially in years like this.

A look inside our March 27 member meeting. 💧

Board President Ralph Anders welcomed attendees. Members connected over lunch in the chow line, and CCWCD board members and field staff spent time with attendees.

We also celebrated a few lucky door prize winners.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and supports water planning, storage and conservation across the South Platte River basin.

Upgrading Hokestra is underway.

We are increasing the size of Central Colorado Water’s canal crossing over the Last Chance Ditch near Interstate 25 and Highway 119. This upgrade will help move more water, faster, so we can fill the Hokestra Complex reservoirs more efficiently.

Projects like this support reliable water storage and help keep water available for farms and communities across the South Platte River basin.

Drought conditions are worsening across Colorado after a dry winter and unseasonably warm temperatures.

Statewide snowpack is just 54% of normal, and the South Platte River Basin sits at 63% of where it should be for this time of the year.

Even with recent storms, it has not been enough to make up for one of the driest winters on record. And with snowpack typically peaking in early April, Colorado is already running out of time to catch up.

This is exactly why Central Colorado Water Conservancy District exists. By securing water rights and investing in storage, Central helps keep water in the South Platte River Basin and available for farms and communities when supplies run short.

Did you know Central Colorado Water Conservancy District helped fund the environmental pool created through the Chatfield Reallocation Project? 💧

It’s water set aside to support the river, wildlife and recreation needs in the South Platte River basin, then reused downstream for agriculture in Weld County.

This is how Central manages water to support farms, communities and long-term supply.

Water is essential to life in Colorado, and understanding where it comes from is the first step in protecting it. Well Watch 2.0 brings the science of water to classrooms giving students hands-on opportunities to study the water cycle, watershed, surface and groundwater interaction, how water is shared among agriculture, communities, and ecosystems, as well as the rich history of water in our arid communities. The Well Watch Program is provided to District schools at no charge.
