ParKelm Farm

ParKelm Farm Over 130 years in the making, ParKelm Farm specializes in grass-fed Hereford beef cattle and Large Black pastured pork using regenerative practices.

Owned and operated by Jordan and Natasha Paris, ParKelm Farm is in the beginning stages of building: building buildings, building herds and flocks, and building the soil. The land has been passed down from Natasha's great-great-grandfather August Kelm, who purchased this land after immigrating from Prussia. We use sustainable/holistic/synergistic/permaculture/organic practices to ensure that the farm is a haven of growth for plants and animals. Thanks for visiting!

These two pictures below, while both beautiful in their own way, tell an important story. Today has been extremely windy: ice shacks have flown away, semis have blown over, and wildfires have been kicked up, all within an hour of here. Soil is not immune to the wind, and visibility was very low on parts of the freeway as I drove home from Stevens Point today. As I got close to home, I came round a bend and saw dirt cyclones swirling across the field pictured below. It wasn't the only field with that issue, but to many of my neighbors’ credit most of the fields have some residue or cover on them in the winter. Jordan took the second picture at the farm a little later in the day, but it was no less windy. As you can see, our soil and its ecosystem, organic matter, and nutrients, are staying put, where they belong! We have made strides in WI in protecting our soil in recent years, but definitely have a ways to go. Thank you for supporting agriculture that protects our precious soil!

We will be delivering to Madison and the Fox Valley on Saturday, place your order by 9pm Friday at https://parkelm.farm to get your pastured pork raised on healthy, protected soils brought straight to you!

Sending you hope in this holiday season
The past week I have been reflecting on the way agriculture in Wisconsin has changed since we started farming in 2012. We knew when we began this journey that we wanted to be part of the solution, and that there were indeed many problems in agriculture, a large one being the impact of farming on water quality. Back then it felt like the only farmers who were talking about soil health and regenerative systems were folks on the fringe. In the years since, I and the folks in the industry have learned a lot. I’ve learned the science of agricultural systems of all kinds much more deeply and the ways in which the ‘regenerative’ movement is problematic or missing the mark, and mainstream ag has learned that practices once considered ‘out there’ have a place on many farms. This week I attended the Wisconsin Water and Soil Health Conference and not only was it packed, the vibe in conventional ag circles feels to have shifted. I feel like the conversations we’re having are more honest than they were even a couple years ago, and they’re also more optimistic. We know that ag is still dealing with legacy and current impacts on the environment, but we now know that we can reduce nitrate losses and some phosphorus losses, and the adoption of those practices is increasing. I left the conference feeling more hopeful than I had in a while, so I hope that this provides you with some, too.

Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday!

However you observed yesterday, we hope it was one full of warmth and love. We are grateful for the large number of nuts that our hickory trees dropped this fall, which are providing a tasty scavenger hunt for the pigs as the greenery has faded.

We will be doing deliveries tomorrow and it’s cold enough that you don’t have to worry about it melting, so whether you are done shopping or deal-chasing, on the road or hibernating, let this small business bring you some sausages, smoked hocks, and so much more, all raised with love and gratitude on our little piece of paradise.

PS. We saw Wicked yesterday (we saw the stage version in London ages ago) and that reminded us that on this farm our heritage Large Black Hogs are always showing us that ‘you know black is this year’s pink!’
