This is little Mini. She was born 2 weeks ago, weighed 3 pounds and had a temperature of 97 degrees. I wasn't sure I'd be able to save her. Im thinking about selling her as a teacup sheep 😆.

Milking season has officially begun here on the farm. If you're wanting to have some delicious and nutritious sheep's milk, send me a text 660-539-7887. We will have milk for sale in about a week.

In the presentations I give, there is a short talk on pregnancy toxemia. I let my attendees know that they can go to Linessa Farms, LLC and read a great explanation of it that Tim wrote.
On the 27th of March, my favorite ewe came down with pregnancy toxemia. She was acting totally normal. Went into her stall to eat her morning grain, ate all of it. When I went to let her out, she was down and could not get up. I had a feeling what it was. I went to the locker where I keep all my medications and got the bottle of ketone strips. I was able to check her urine pretty quickly. Next, I took her temperature and then called my vet.
It's pretty scary. If she didn't respond to the treatment, 60cc of propolyen glycol 2x a day, we would have to induce labor. Three weeks out from her lambing date, the lambs would not survive.
She has responded to the treatments, but she is still in guarded condition. Treatment will continue until she lambs (due May 14). If she relapses, we will induce labor and hope the lambs survive.
I have a presentation to give tomorrow at Welpman Springs. The topic of pregnancy toxemia will definitely have more discussion.

One of the biggest concerns raising small ruminants is keeping your animals' worm burden down. Wormer resistance is an astronomical problem. Finding alternative ways to combat the destructive barber pole worms is a priority.
Here, at the farm, we rely on sericea lespedeza to keep our sheep and goats' worm burden in check. Sericea is great for inhibiting reproduction of BP worms, as well as controlling cocidiosus in our young kids and lambs.
We are fortunate enough to be able to bale our own sericea. To keep the animals from wasting any of the sericea, i use the Jaylor TMR to cut the hay in smaller pieces. The sheep and goats pick out all the sericea first and then eat the other grasses that are mixed in.
For a dairy farmer, this type of feed increases profits due to not having to dump milk because of withdrawal times for chemical dewormers. Sericea is also known as "the poor man's alfalfa". This is due to sericea being nutritionally similar to alfalfa.

Last Saturday was shearing day. My go to guy for this job is Guy Frazier. Funny story. I attended a shearing class at Lincoln University. That's where I met Guy. I only had 4 sheep at the time and thought "I can do this". After my 1st shearing season, I called Guy. He's been doing it ever since.
We sheared and trimmed the hooves of 15 sheep. Guy shearing, my excellent helper, Hayleigh Jackson picking up the wool and bagging it, and me and my husband trimming hooves.
If anyone wants raw sheep wool, let me know. If I don't get any takers, im shipping the wool off to be turned into pellets for gardening.

Just got back from the Farm to Fork Summit. We would have stayed longer, but the weather looks a little dicey.
If you haven't attended this event, you really should try to go. There were many wonderful presentations, a tasty lunch, and lots of people who want to see small farms succeed.
