Happy Friday! This week’s feature is ‘Canoz Jaguar’ and I LOVE THIS FLOWER. It was bred in Australia and so it agrees with my hot and arid Eastern Washington climate. 100 degree days don’t stop this one! The shape is somewhat unique so it is easily recognizable in the field or an arrangement. It’s not too lemony like a like of yellows but isn’t too golden either. This dahlia is a great balance. It’s not overly popular which lands it in my “this dahlia is underrated!” category.

🔆 Does not melt, does not wilt
🔆 Color like a sunflower
🔆 A sexy lady on the prowl

My wonderful friends indulged me with a great conversation about the origin of the farm, land stewardship and our vision for adding beauty to the world. As a local grower in I have enjoyed every single episode of as they come out. I was truly starstruck to be there and am honored to have my own episode. I’m so thankful to Hilary and Duane who became fast friends. Please give my episode a listen and browse the many other great episodes highlighting my throughout the area.

Did you stop your scrolling? I thought so. That’s the magic of this dahlia. Dark foliage ✔️ deep red blooms ✔️ perfect size ✔️. This is ‘Smarty Pants.’ She’s been growing in my garden since my second season growing not just because she’s stunning but because the tubers are so abundant and strong I always have extras. They come out of storage plump and vibrant. I think this plant is more excited for spring than I am. If you are in a climate where you want to try overwintering your dahlias, I think this would be a good candidate to experiment with.

🍠 The best tubers, hands down.
🍠 Foliage makes a great filler and can stand alone, too.
🍠 A handful of these will make you feel like a queen.

A huge favorite on the farm is this underrated beauty, Day Dreamer. This dahlia is prolific and the tubers are virtually indestructible. The photos speak for themselves on how stunning these blooms are and if you’re a beginner, this flower makes growing dahlias so easy!

Penhill Watermelon is not talked about nearly enough. This is another flower I’m featuring as an underrated variety. I imported it from the Netherlands in 2020 and it’s gained quite the following in the United States. The great news is I have SO many tubers to sell of this one since it’s an amazingly prolific tuber producer. I get about 12-15 tubers off of a single plant, so it’s not to be missed if you want to expand your garden quickly or share tubers with friends. The blooms are massive and even though they’re huge, wind and rain don’t phase this plant. I don’t even bother to stake it! Please buy this flower. It deserves the best home.

🍉 Sweet and summery
🍉 Strong through summer storms and heat waves
🍉 Bigger than my dog (see slide 3)
🍉 Could take over the world with the rate at which it reproduces
🍉 Makes you drool

Time for my yearly snow appreciation post since it has finally started snowing in Spokane! The snow is SO pretty. It’s the time of year when the world slows down and gets a little more quiet. What’s not to love about that? I’m grateful to live where it gets bitter cold and where it snows. It keeps the big bugs and creepy crawlies at bay. It replenishes our ground water. Snow sports are fun, even though doing puzzles is my favorite snow sport 😉

If you moved to the area from somewhere else, snow is your yearly encouragement to go back where you came from. You can take your complaints and your bad driving with you. Enjoy your drought 🧐

This is ‘Skipley Spot of Gold.’ This dahlia gets all the hype and is one of them that is still underrated. It could never be rated highly enough if you ask me. It produces the best tubers, and lots of them. It’s a prolific bloomer and the spots of gold make it so textural and cool. Everyone who comes to the farm comments on this one, and you can grow it for yourself!

Skipley Spot of Gold will join the tuber sale on January 1st. Spoiler alert: the price is only $15! We believe in equitable pricing which allows home gardeners to be able to compete with larger scale farm businesses. We also base pricing on labor and material inputs, which are the same across all dahlia varieties. What we don’t believe in is artificially inflating the price of popular varieties in order to make a quick buck. Is not uncommon to see Skipley Spot of Gold and other sought after tubers fetch $30 or more. At Old Barn Blooms we love to share and are glad to bring you all of our tubers priced at either $12 or $15. We hope you can add this beauty to your garden 👛.

💰No amount of hype is enough.
💰Will make you wonder, “How did I grow that beautiful thing??”
💰Worth her weight in gold.

Happy Flower Friday my flower friends! Let me introduce you to one of my literal flower friends, ‘Glenplace.’ Glenplace is another dahlia that I consider way underrated. You will be able to snag as many Glenplace tubers as you want this year, courtesy of a plant that is an amazingly abundant tuber producer. It has great eyes, petite tubers and clumps are as cute as a button. What makes this variety extra special though is the teeeeeeeniest blooms. Like, that wasn’t enough “e”’s teeny. Most are only the size of a quarter. You might be thinking: There are lots of small flowers in the world. Dahlias are popular for their size. That’s true but when you see all of the drama and detail of a dahlia shrunk down miniature, you’ll be reminded of how special dahlias are in any size. I haven’t seen a dahlia with smaller flowers. It’s also hardy as heck and has beautiful moody coloring.

🔍 Brilliantly small so your partner won’t notice that you’re growing yet another plant.
🔍 Tubers galore and easy dividing.
🔍 Inspires floral crowns and floral wearables.
🔍 I don’t know where Glen’s place is, but I want to go.

Dahlia tuber sale launches at 9AM PST on New Years Day!
